PLEASE NOTE HOURS: Position generally works up to 19 hours per week. Must be able to work days, evenings and/or weekend. This position provides assistance for assigned library operations, programs, and services. MAJOR DUTIES Assists with the operation of the circulation desk; checks materials in and out. Collects overdue fines and replacement fees; removes fine data from patron accounts. Accepts cash and check payments for fines and fees. Assists customers in making credit card transactions Registers new patrons; updates patron information. Assists patrons in the use of computers and other library equipment. Answers patron questions in person, by phone, email, and text. Makes copies; folds brochures; replenishes literature displays. Retrieves returned items from book drop; identifies and shelves reserved books; arranges books on book carts for shelving. Shelves materials in proper orders, including books, audio‑visual materials, and other library materials. Assists patrons in locating materials. Reserves materials for patrons. Performs opening and closing procedures. Shelf reads stacks for accuracy and straightens shelves. Sorts incoming mail and records receipts of new magazines and newspapers. Performs basic maintenance of computer systems and office equipment. Performs all other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Knowledge of public library policies, procedures, programs, and services. Knowledge of patron services principles. Knowledge of library computers and software systems. Skill in the use of computer automated library catalog and circulation systems. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the operation of computers and general office machines. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Circulation Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot‑checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES Guidelines include patron confidentiality standards and city and library policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK The work consists of related clerical and patron service duties. The unique needs of each patron contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to assist with library operations, programs, and services. Success in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of library services to the general public. CONTACTS Contacts are typically with co‑workers, other city personnel, patrons, couriers, volunteers, and representatives from other libraries or library systems. Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, or to resolve problems. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects. The work is typically performed in library. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY None. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent required. Less than one year of related experience required. Must be flexible and able to work day, evening and weekend hours.
