Summary:

The Director of Communications is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies that enhance the credit union’s brand, strengthen member and ambassador relationships, and support SRP’s organizational goals. Working in close partnership with the Director of Marketing, this role ensures that all messaging, storytelling, and brand communications are aligned with marketing initiatives to create a unified and impactful member experience. The Director- role oversees internal and external communications, media relations, public relations, digital presence, and community engagement to ensure consistent, mission-driven messaging. Success in this role requires exceptional communication skills, strategic insight, and the ability to lead initiatives that elevate the credit union’s reputation and member experience.

StandardWork Schedule:

Monday through Friday, schedule varies based on departmental and community event planning needs. Occasional early mornings, late evenings, and Saturdays required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Strategic Leadership

Develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy that promotes the credit union’s mission, vision, and brand.

Partner with Chief Development Officer to align communications with organizational objectives, member growth, and community impact goals.

Serve as the primary communications advisor providing strategic counsel on messaging, reputation management, and organizational storytelling.

External Communications & Public Relations

Manage media relations, press releases, and public statements to ensure positive visibility for the credit union.

Oversee all advertising and promotional campaigns in coordination with marketing.

Lead crisis communication planning and response efforts to protect the credit union’s reputation.

Cultivate relationships with media outlets, community organizations, and key stakeholders to enhance public perception and engagement.

Internal Communications

Develop and maintain clear, consistent internal communication channels to keep ambassadors informed and engaged.

Support leadership in delivering key organizational updates, change management messages, and cultural initiatives.

Oversee internal newsletters, intranet content, and employee recognition communications.

Digital & Brand Management

Oversee digital communications, including website content, email marketing, and social media strategy.

Ensure brand consistency across all channels, campaigns, and materials.

Measure and analyze communication effectiveness using data and reporting tools to drive continuous improvement.

Community & Member Engagement

Support the credit union’s community outreach programs, events, and sponsorships to enhance visibility and reinforce mission alignment.

Collaborate with Lending, Small Business Development, and Member Experience teams to communicate the value of membership and strengthen member loyalty.

Leadership & Team Development

Supervise and mentor communications staff, fostering a culture of creativity, accountability, and collaboration.

Manage departmental budgets, vendor relationships, and project timelines to ensure quality and efficiency.

Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure all communication activities and materials comply with regulatory requirements and internal policies.

Coordinate with Compliance and Risk teams to maintain audit readiness and safeguard the credit union’s reputation.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This role may oversee communications or creative team members and manage external vendors or consultants as needed.

Qualifications Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field required.

Master’s degree preferred.

7+ years of progressive experience in communications, marketing, or public relations, preferably within financial services or member-focused organizations.

Demonstrated success in developing and executing strategic communication plans.

Experience managing media relations, leading teams, and coordinating complex communication initiatives.

Technical Skills

Strong understanding of digital communication platforms, analytics, and media tools.

Proficient in content management systems, social media platforms, and campaign reporting.

Knowledge of brand management, public relations best practices, and crisis communication strategies.

Strategic thinker with excellent judgment and a hands-on approach to execution.

Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence across departments.

Effective project management abilities with a focus on outcomes and accountability.

Clear, persuasive communicator with the ability to represent the credit union at all organizational levels and in the community.

Physical Demands

May be required to stand, use hands, and reach with arms.
