California Post seeks a dedicated Deputy Sports Editor to lead sports coverage in one of the world’s most vibrant sporting cities. The role reports to the Sports Editor and will manage day‑to‑day operations of the sports desk, mentor reporters, and shape the agenda across digital and print.

Base pay range $100,000.00/yr – $130,000.00/yr

Responsibilities:

Support the Sports Editor in overseeing all sports coverage for the California Post

Manage the daily workflow of the sports desk, setting priorities, assigning stories, and ensuring deadlines are met

Edit, polish, and elevate copy to meet the Post’s standards of clarity, impact, and voice

Provide guidance, feedback, and mentorship to reporters and columnists, helping them sharpen their coverage and source stories

Identify stories, trends, and cultural moments that matter to LA sports fans

Collaborate with the Sports Editor on shaping coverage strategies to ensure the Post is setting the pace, not following the pack

Work closely with photo, design, video, and digital teams to package stories in creative, engaging ways

Partner with the audience development team to expand the reach of our sports coverage across digital and social platforms

Monitor analytics and audience insights to help refine coverage and grow readership

Requirements:

At least 7 years of professional sports journalism experience, including newsroom leadership or editing experience

Strong editing and headline‑writing skills, with the ability to sharpen copy quickly under deadline pressure

Proven knowledge of Los Angeles and national sports, with strong instincts for what stories will resonate with fans

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced newsroom environment

Experience mentoring and guiding reporters to deliver impactful coverage

Proficiency with WordPress or similar CMS platforms; familiarity with digital workflows

Strong understanding of social media and audience engagement strategies

Collaborative spirit with excellent communication and organizational skills

A passion for sports and the storytelling that brings fans closer to the teams, players, and culture they care about

Note:

This role will be expected to report on‑site 5 days per week.
