Duties and Responsibilities

Operate communications center phones, two‑way radio, weather radar, computer database, and mapping systems to support air and ground patient transport.

Respond to emergency transport calls, dispatch crew, and set up teleconferences with physicians, transport nurses, and referral sources.

Provide aircraft or ground transport availability, weather projections, location and time projections.

Recommend service utilization to medical control officers based on assessment of relevant factors.

Coordinate with Public Safety (Durham EMS, Fire, Police, Rescue) for transport services.

Provide statistical information to flight crew (average flight distance, time, coordinates, landing site directions). Monitor weather radar.

Coordinate emergency and direct admissions with charge nurses/physicians, ensure accurate documentation of divert status.

Collaborate with MCOs, Transfer Center Nurses, Patient Placement, Life Flight Nurses, Case Managers, Billing, and other departments to enter information into dispatch software.

Maintain database on referrals and hospital locations; read county, state, and specialized maps.

Provide excellent customer service to co‑workers, patients, families, and doctors.

Record data and maintain reports, forms, and daily logs.

Participate in Life Flight educational outreach and committees.

Perform related duties incidental to the described work.

Work Schedule

3‑12 hour shifts, rotating; primarily days 7 a.m.–7 p.m., with occasional night coverage.

Location: 100 Golden Drive, Durham, NC 27705 (future location 14 Moore Drive, Durham, NC 27709).

Education Required High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience Required One year of dispatching experience in a 911 control line, fire/police dispatch, air traffic control, hospital‑based health, or related setting.

Certification or Licensure

One of the following: North Carolina EMT licensure, National Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification, NAACS or IAMTC Certified Communicator, or CFC certification.

Must obtain Certified Flight Communicator (CFC) certification within one year of employment.

Learn Maestro and Dispatch software (Flight Vector, CAD); master within 6 months.

Evaluate progress during the 90‑day probationary period.
