Reporting into the Politics Editor, this role will dig beneath the headlines to uncover stories that matter, through data‑driven investigations, public records, and exclusive sources. You will produce deeply reported, narrative‑rich storytelling that holds California’s political landscape accountable.
Base pay range
$95,000.00/yr - $125,000.00/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead deep‑dive and investigative reporting on California politics in Sacramento and Los Angeles.
- Develop and execute enterprise journalism using political contacts, FOIA, data analysis, and a hunger to be first with story.
- Analyze budgets, legislation, campaign finance, court filings, and other sources to surface trends and hold institutions accountable.
- Break exclusive investigative stories and pursue original angles beyond surface‑level coverage.
- Collaborate closely with editors to refine story ideas, findings, and presentation for digital and print.
- Use social media and digital tools to report, source, promote, and enrich investigations.
- Maintain rigorous fact‑checking and narrative clarity, even under extended deadlines.
- Monitor political developments broadly and use context and depth to inform longer‑form storytelling.
- Work with visual and digital teams to integrate charts, graphics, and supplementary content into investigative stories.
Requirements
- 5+ years of investigative or enterprise political reporting in a newsroom setting.
- Proven track record of uncovering complex stories through public records, data analysis, and exclusive sourcing.
- Exceptional editorial judgment and narrative storytelling abilities, particularly with long‑form journalism.
- Data‑driven mindset: ability to interpret and analyze public financial records, court documents, or policy datasets.
- Expertise in FOIA processes, public records, and accountability reporting methods.
- Strong source network within government, advocacy, legal, or community sectors.
- Proficiency with WordPress or CMS platforms; familiarity with analytics dashboards and data visualization tools is a plus.
- High adaptability in a fast‑paced environment, with flexibility for irregular hours as investigative work demands.
- Strong writing and reporting skills are core; on‑camera experience is strongly preferred to present stories on video.
- Clear communication, collaboration, and resilience in managing prolonged, high‑stakes reporting projects.
