Las Vegas Review-Journal is seeking a dynamic Assistant Sports Editor — Digital Strategy & Growth to lead digital coverage, real‑time storytelling, and social media strategy in one of the most vibrant sports markets in the country. From the Raiders and Golden Knights to UNLV, Aces, high schools and Formula 1, this editor will help shape how Southern Nevada experiences sports online every day.
This position comes with the opportunity to lead coverage of some of the biggest events in sports. Las Vegas will host the 2027 College Football Playoff National Championship, and the city is the front‑runner for Super Bowl 63 in 2029. The Athletics’ new Major League Baseball stadium is under construction on the Strip and scheduled to open in 2028. Within a week or so of that first pitch, Las Vegas will host the 2028 NCAA Men’s Final Four.
The Assistant Sports Editor — Digital Strategy & Growth will oversee the Review‑Journal’s digital sports product — from breaking news alerts to social engagement — ensuring our coverage reaches readers where they are and delivers the authority, speed, and creativity that define RJ Sports.
Responsibilities
- Direct real‑time sports coverage across reviewjournal.com, mobile, push alerts, newsletters, and social platforms.
- Manage homepage and app placement, headline optimization, and digital packaging for key sports stories.
- Oversee and grow the RJ Sports presence on social media (X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube), maintaining a sharp, informed, and local voice.
- Collaborate with reporters, editors, photographers, and video producers to develop digital‑first storytelling, including live blogs, analysis, and visual features.
- Use analytics and SEO tools to drive audience growth and engagement, and adjust strategy based on real‑time data.
- Plan and execute digital coverage around major sports moments — breaking news, championships, and major Las Vegas events.
- Coach reporters on digital presentation, social best practices, and writing for multiple platforms.
- Work closely with the Assistant Managing Editor‑Sports to develop long‑term digital strategy and subscription growth initiatives.
Qualifications
- At least three years of experience in sports editing or digital production in a newsroom environment.
- Proven ability to manage breaking sports news and digital workflows under pressure.
- Strong grasp of SEO, analytics, alternative storyforms and social media platform strategy.
- Excellent headline and display copy skills.
- Knowledge of the Las Vegas sports landscape and its expanding professional scene.
- Collaborative mindset and ability to work closely with reporters, designers, and audience teams.
- Passion for smart, fast, accurate sports journalism that connects with readers online.
This position reports to the Assistant Managing Editor‑Sports and plays a key leadership role in ensuring the Review‑Journal continues to set the standard for digital sports coverage in Las Vegas and beyond.
The job is based in Las Vegas, Nevada, and becomes open January 5, 2026.
Las Vegas is a dynamic news market as anywhere in the country, and the Review‑Journal is the area’s dominant news source. Southern Nevada is home to about 2.4 million people, plus up to 200,000 visitors on any given day. It is a diverse metro area with a vibrant downtown and cultural scene, and it’s a half‑day drive or less to some of the West’s most spectacular outdoor recreation and national parks.
