Community Sports Editor
The Baltimore Sun seeks a Community Sports Editor to lead our coverage of high school and Navy sports. This position will be integral in driving new readers to The Sun’s coverage by utilizing and understanding social media and the importance of engaging with the community. We’re looking for a sharp editor who can develop and grow early-career reporters. The candidate should be able to recognize national trends or topics and be able to work with reporters to localize them, and develop in-depth coverage plans for major events such as the Army-Navy Game. This position also will work alongside other sports editors to plan coverage and assist with editing Ravens, Orioles and college sports stories.
Essential Functions
- Assign and edit sports stories focusing on the dozens of high schools across the Baltimore region, as well as the Naval Academy and its 36 varsity sports teams
- Assign and edit breaking news across sports beats
- Mentor journalists, giving constructive feedback with the goal of continually honing their reporting and writing skills.
- Coordinate production of high-value digital content items such as scoring galleries, power rankings and other content local readers can't get anywhere else
- Collaborate with the social media team to create and plan engaging video content
- Collaborate with editors across the newsroom to generate story ideas
- Use audience analytics and news judgment to inform decision-making
- Assist with audience strategies and story planning for upcoming events and games
- Edit daily copy as needed
- Produce a daily budget, a list of stories going online and intended for print.
- Design print pages for community papers as well as The Sun
- Updates sports collections on our websites
- Work flexible hours, including nights and weekends as sporting events occur
- Participate in daily in-office meetings
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of 3 years of professional reporting experience (news publication and/or daily or weekly journalism experience strongly preferred).
- Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system.
- Excellent knowledge of AP Style, SEO and digital strategies.
- Management experience that includes a collegial and encouraging management style that fosters budding talent and challenges veteran employees
- Solid sports journalistic credentials with comprehensive knowledge of media law including copyright, libel, two-party consent, privacy, and fair use questions, in addition to a highly developed sense of ethics.
Salary Range: $55,000 - $70,000
