Mechanical Designer – Overview
We are seeking a mechanical designer to join our Mission Critical team in Baltimore. The role is open to recent graduates or those soon to graduate.
Job Description Summary
The Mechanical Designer has proven experience designing and analyzing HVAC and plumbing systems, including developing drawings, writing field survey reports, and performing mechanical design calculations. Systems covered are heating, ventilation, air conditioning, hydronic, ductwork, piping, domestic water, sanitary, and related mechanical controls. The Designer delivers coordinated design plans and documents under the supervision of a Mechanical Engineer.
Day-to-Day Functions
Provide HVAC and plumbing design solutions using industry-accepted mechanical engineering best practices.
Perform mechanical design calculations (heating/cooling loads, airflow and duct sizing, pipe sizing, pump head calculations, equipment selection) with some supervision.
Prepare HVAC system layouts, including ductwork design, equipment zoning, diffuser/grille selection, and mechanical controls.
Prepare plumbing system designs, including domestic water, sanitary, storm, natural gas, and specialty piping systems.
Utilize Microsoft Office, BIM/Revit, CAD, and industry software such as TileFlow, Trane Trace/Carrier HAP, pipe and duct sizing tools, and other mechanical design applications.
Design Responsibilities
Actively participate in design and coordination meetings.
Demonstrate strong knowledge of HVAC and plumbing system design, including schematic diagrams, riser diagrams, and equipment schedules.
Execute construction-phase services including submittal review, RFI responses, and design modifications.
Conduct field surveys, site verifications, and construction support activities.
Remain self-driven to complete design tasks and coordinate design issues with the Mechanical Engineer, team members, and outside consultants.
Maintain a professional work ethic and demonstrate a strong desire to work within a multidisciplinary design team.
Communicate and coordinate effectively with colleagues, engineers, architects, and other project stakeholders.
Demonstrate strong mechanical engineering design knowledge and skills.
Bring an energetic, positive attitude to contribute and excel in a team environment.
Successfully work on multiple projects and assignments simultaneously.
Adhere to project design schedules and deliverables.
Competencies, Education, and Experience
Preferred Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering (Mechanical emphasis), or equivalent.
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification preferred, or willingness to obtain within two years.
Location & Compensation
Baltimore, MD – Salary range: $85,000–$110,000
