Position Summary McCarthy is seeking an External Communications Manager to lead media relations, craft compelling content, and manage public relations agency relationships for our Southern Region. The ideal candidate would be creative and collaborative, with a knack for strategic, brand‑building storytelling. We’re looking for a critical thinker who is comfortable working with partners at all levels and guiding various internal audiences toward a common goal. With a focus on public relations, media coordination, and crisis communications, this role will cover our Southern region states and is based in our Dallas, TX office. Key Responsibilities As an External Communications Manager, you will:

Build and nurture relationships with internal and external stakeholders to align communications work with business objectives.

Create engaging storytelling that highlights the human elements in technical construction projects, making complex work accessible to diverse audiences.

Collaborate across teams, listening first and leading when necessary to develop compelling narratives.

Develop, produce, and manage multiple deliverables simultaneously while ensuring a cohesive team environment.

Partner with internal stakeholders to execute and analyze marketing and PR campaigns across our southern markets, from Texas to Georgia.

Navigate between long‑term narrative strategy and urgent press releases and media inquiries.

Leverage data to build trust with internal and external audiences.

Established media contacts within the AEC industry and broader business media.

Exceptional creative and technical journalism/PR skills, including crafting press releases, positioning executives, and developing social media.

Strategic messaging that supports and strengthens our brand.

Managing local and industry‑specific media listings and distributions.

Experience creating polished deliverables such as media releases, event coordination, social media, press kits, website updates, and all external communications.

PR agency and consulting management for cohesive messaging and tracking across geographies.

Media opportunity identification for strategic initiatives.

Crisis management and statement generation.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Business, or related field.

5+ years of experience in B2B communications – coordinating media relations, monitoring, distribution, writing, and external communications management.

Experience in creative and technical writing, including press releases, industry publications, internal communications training, overall messaging and branding.

Track record conducting research, generating compelling narratives, and managing stakeholder expectations.

Desktop proficiency in Microsoft and Adobe Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator).

Experience with CRM database management systems; Microsoft Dynamics CRM a plus.

Social media management and media monitoring experience – Hootsuite, Amplify, Meltwater a plus.

Exceptional organizational, writing, communication, time management, and project management skills.
