Compa Industries is seeking an experienced Senior Design Specialist to support major engineering and construction projects in Greenville, SC. This role is ideal for a high-level designer capable of producing, checking, and coordinating complex design deliverables with minimal oversight, while also guiding junior staff and providing essential field and engineering support.
About the Role
The Senior Design Specialist will originate, modify, and check engineering design drawings, perform field walkdowns, develop 3D and 2D design deliverables, and assist in solving technical design challenges. You will serve as a key contributor to multidisciplinary project teams—ensuring design accuracy, compliance with project standards, and alignment with engineering intent.
Your responsibilities will directly impact drawing quality, constructability, material takeoffs, and overall project execution.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Drafting Execution
- Produce and revise engineering design drawings with minimal supervision.
- Perform complete design, layout, and checking of complex drawings to ensure technical accuracy.
- Execute 3D modeling work (S3D preferred) and generate or modify 3D design details.
- Conduct design calculations including tray/conduit fill, link loss, space allocation, breaker sizing, and more.
Field & Project Support
- Walk down field systems independently, interpret conditions, and update drawings accordingly.
- Provide field assistance to resolve drawing discrepancies and prepare supplemental sketches.
- Interpret and check supplier and multi-discipline drawings for compatibility and design needs.
Documentation & Material Control
- Produce material take-offs with complete accuracy.
- Maintain design records, calculations, and backup documentation to support design decisions.
Technical Leadership
- Mentor and support junior designers and drafters, promoting best practices and safety awareness.
- Assist supervisors with progress tracking, manpower planning, work assignments, and design problem-solving.
- Function as Lead Designer when required, ensuring drawing quality, schedule adherence, design organization, and workflow delegation.
Software & Standards
- Utilize MS Word, Excel, Outlook, MicroStation, AutoCAD, and other design tools.
- Apply applicable codes, standards, job procedures, and specifications across all design tasks.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship (mandatory).
- Associate degree in a discipline related to engineering design.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive drafting/design experience in engineering or construction (nuclear preferred).
- Strong working knowledge of DOE Orders and applicable federal, state, and local design standards.
- Experience in one or more design disciplines: electrical, mechanical, structural, communications, fire protection, civil, etc.
- Ability to interpret site plans, building plans, logic diagrams, cable schedules, and other engineering documents.
Preferred Skills
- 3D modeling experience using S3D.
- Supplier drawing and vendor data interpretation skills.
- Strong understanding of material and equipment selection.
- Experience supporting construction, field engineering, and system walk-downs.
- Demonstrated ability to act as Lead Designer on technical projects.
