Position Overview Position title:

Instructor (Non-Senate, Non-Tenure Track)

Salary range:

Compensation varies by course delivery format. For a synchronous Live Online course, estimated pay is $2,200 - $2,300 total per course. For an asynchronous Fixed Date Online course, paid $160 - $175 per enrolled student, total $1,280 - $4,375 per course. For an asynchronous Start Anytime Online course, paid $160-$175 per final student course grade submitted each month, total $800 - $8,750 per course.

Percent time:

Part-time, agreed on a course-by-course basis.

Anticipated start:

Some appointments may begin as early as the spring semester.

Position Description UC Berkeley Extension (UNEX) has been building bridges between UC Berkeley and the public since 1891. UNEX serves professional and continuing education goals for thousands of people each year and plays an essential part of the University mission to extend research and scholarship to a global community, increase access to higher education for non-traditional, online, and international students, and improve the workforce. UC Berkeley Extension is part of the division under the leadership of the Dean of Extended Education, also including Berkeley Summer Sessions, Berkeley Study Abroad, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

UC Berkeley Extension invites applications for a pool of qualified, dynamic instructors committed to professional and continuing education in Editing and Technical Communication to teach one or more online courses each year for our Arts and Humanities department.

Courses Offered Online

Online instruction delivered asynchronously through Canvas or synchronously live lectures via Zoom.

Most synchronous live online lecture courses are offered in the evening and on the weekend (U.S.A. Pacific Time).

Synchronous Online Teaching Experience (Zoom)

Asynchronous Online Teaching Experience (Canvas)

General Duties

For synchronous instruction (live online courses):

syllabus development; assignment creation; lesson planning; preparing and submitting required texts and course materials; reviewing and updating Canvas course site; delivering lectures, presentations, and learning activities for required hours.

For asynchronous instruction (fixed date or start anytime online courses):

reviewing the syllabus and pre-populated course content; learning and utilizing Canvas tools; requesting training needs from the Program Director or Department Director.

For all instruction: completing required trainings (UC Presidential policies); responding to student questions promptly; grading assignments and posting final grades; utilizing University-approved platforms (Canvas, Zoom, Instructor Portal, Google Workspace, etc.); reviewing policies and guidelines; responding to other requests from Program Director or Department Director.

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree required.

Additional Qualifications (required at time of start)

3 or more years of professional industry work experience since degree.

1 or more years of teaching experience since degree.

U.S.A. Residency and U.S.A. Work Authorization: All work must be performed in the United States. Non-citizens must have valid U.S. work authorization; this position does not sponsor visas.

Preferred Qualifications

4 or more years of professional industry work experience in editing (copyediting, developmental editing, indexing, proofreading) and/or technical writing, technical editing, or technical information design.

2 or more years of teaching, training, or coaching experience in the course subject within a U.S. corporate environment or at a U.S. college/university institution.

Experience creating syllabi, learning objectives, lectures/presentations, learning activities, assignments, assessments, exams, and quizzes.

Experience teaching online and/or developing academic content for online courses.

Ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information.

Ability to support the success of all students through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy.

Effective verbal/written communication and presentation skills (English).

Effective organizational skills with attention to detail.

Ability to collaborate with colleagues and work within a team environment.

Proficiency (or willingness to learn) in instructional and other technology: Canvas, Panopto, Zoom, Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint), Google Drive/Dropbox, Google Workspace tools.
