Position Overview The Department of Music welcomes applications for an Associate Director of Bands and Artist Teacher of Instrumental Performance. This full‑time, clinical specialist (non‑tenure track) position includes teaching, academic advising, and performance leadership.
Responsibilities
Conduct the TCNJ Concert Band and/or TCNJ Wind Orchestra.
Serve as an artist‑teacher (private lesson faculty) in the candidate’s area of expertise.
Teach additional courses in the music education curriculum based on the candidate’s area of expertise and departmental needs; possible courses include conducting, instrumental literature, brass/woodwind/percussion methods, and student teaching supervision.
Serve as the academic advisor for a cohort of music majors and/or minors.
Foster a high‑level performance and education environment within a diverse liberal arts context; exhibit excellent oral, interpersonal, and writing skills.
Maintain awareness of current developments in secondary and post‑secondary education; participate in independent, departmental, and college‑wide recruitment and service activities.
Develop and sustain relationships with local and regional music educators to support the stability and growth of the Department of Music.
Qualifications Required
DMA in Conducting (instrumental emphasis); or terminal degree in music with appropriate artistic expertise and experience (ABD status effective by August 2026 will also be considered).
Extensive experience and accomplishment as an instrumental conductor‑educator at the secondary and collegiate levels, including as a graduate assistant.
Proven record of high‑level artistry and performance on the primary instrument, with experience in solo and ensemble settings and private studio teaching at various levels.
Record of visibility in the profession, with the ability to attract talented students to the College and support departmental stability.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with private lesson teaching and studio development at the collegiate level.
Familiarity with K‑12 teaching and/or instrumental pedagogy.
Familiarity with athletic band instruction and development.
