Overview
Portland State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Visual & Critical Studies in the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design. The position begins Fall 2026, is full‑time, tenure‑track (1.0 FTE, 9‑month term) and is ranked C – Assistant Professor.
Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in contemporary art and socially engaged practice, with a typical annual load of 28 credits (about 7 classes) distributed across three quarters. Advise and mentor students, emphasizing equity, access, interdisciplinary inquiry and community engagement. Maintain an active creative practice and professional research that is locally, nationally and internationally visible. Participate in program and curricular development, serve in coordinator roles for Art Practice, collaborate across the Schnitzer School and the broader university, and serve on school and university committees. Engage in professional service activities, including program activities and community outreach aligned with visual literary and critical inquiry.
Minimum Qualifications
MFA or PhD (terminal degree) in Art, Design, Visual Studies or a related field. Active creative practice with professional accomplishments in interdisciplinary art making. Teaching experience at the college or university level beyond graduate assistantships. Experience engaging students in innovative curatorial programming, collaborative projects and critical research across disciplines. Commitment to inclusive, equitable pedagogy and interdisciplinary education. Strong foundation in visual literacy, critical art theory, contemporary art history, and socially engaged work.
Preferred Qualifications
Teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Experience mentoring graduate teaching assistants. Demonstrated commitment to inclusive and equitable pedagogy. Experience with community‑engaged design or collaborative projects. Experience with curriculum development and interdisciplinary initiatives.

Starting annual salary: $74,016, with potential to negotiate above this rate based on experience and market parity.
