About the Role Power Engineers, a member of WSP, is hiring for a

Senior Substation Physical Designer

in our Columbus, OH office. This role supports our Power Delivery Substation Team on medium to extra‑high voltage utility substation projects, delivering technically robust and compliant design solutions.

Responsibilities

Collect and analyze data from site surveys, structural concepts, blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to support drafting and design activities.

Use 3D CADD software to prepare precise drawings, resolve design details, and work closely with engineers on moderate‑complexity projects.

Provide technical design assistance, ensuring constructability, maintainability, and compliance with design standards.

Serve as a consultant on work progress and problem resolution; oversee drafting support activities for moderate‑scope projects.

Verify accuracy of calculations, designs, and change orders, and resolve technical problems as needed.

Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to execute project work and maintain quality control and contract compliance.

Prepare multiple design versions for engineering review and coordinate with clients and contractors as required.

Mentor and train entry‑level drafting staff; stay current with the latest drafting techniques and practices.

Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct, health, safety, and policy procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities requested by business needs.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma.

Minimum 9 years of post‑education experience with prior drafting and design support in the discipline.

Proficiency in CADD software including MicroStation and/or AutoCAD, and parametric modeling tools such as Inventor, SolidWorks, or Revit.

Strong knowledge of drafting and design support principles, processes, and techniques.

Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.

Ability to perform technical computations involving geometry and mathematics.

Analytical mindset and sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.

Strong self‑leadership, attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.

Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, spreadsheets, and related software.

Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills for data collation, calculations, and statistical analysis.

Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s policies.

Flexibility to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in a closely related discipline.

Relevant professional licensure or certification.
