Lead SolidWorks Designer
– Comfort Systems USA
Location: Greater Houston, TX
Overview TAS Design & Drafting Group reviews customer requirements, specifications, manufacturing constraints, and other design inputs to generate comprehensive packaged equipment designs and system layouts. The department develops models and drawings based on the design intent communicated by TAS Project Engineers, covering structural, mechanical, electrical, and controls sub‑assemblies. Design outputs are communicated through 3D/CAD drawings for purchase of components and manufacture of TAS products.
Key Job Responsibilities
Interpret piping and instrument diagrams, site layouts, equipment layouts, piping plan drawings, process flow diagrams, specifications, bills of materials, and GA drawings relative to packaged equipment system designs.
Design and modify equipment systems based on customer inputs, ensuring compliance with all codes and recognized standards.
Build and maintain strong relationships with other designers and departments.
Maintain drafting production schedules and ensure accuracy of deliverables.
Deliver consistent value‑engineered alternatives.
Develop, improve, and publish department practices and standards.
Review scope documents and specifications to verify design against intent and customer requirements.
Create moderate to complex, reliable 3D models with precision, including mating surfaces, correct library parts, extrusions, assemblies, and exploded view diagrams with BOMs.
Produce all layouts and section views with accurate BOMs, callouts, and dimensions.
Perform preliminary design calculations and simulations (load lists, flow models, piping and structural stress analysis) for engineer review.
Act as a department technical resource and team leader, training designers on industry and department practices.
Prepare accurate engineering estimates based on scope documents and specifications.
Lead teams of designers through challenging projects.
Serve as a design leader, reinforcing the desired culture and work environment.
Assist with checking other designer work when required.
Execute the design process per all department procedures from inception to closure.
Conduct flawless model reviews, audit models and reviews of other designers.
Travel to customer or vendor sites as required.
Perform any additional responsibilities assigned by TAS.
Job Skills
Lead designer and team leader in package/plant designs and layouts with broad knowledge of technical applications, maintenance, operation, and clearance constraints across structural, mechanical, controls, and electrical equipment systems.
Knowledgeable of codes typically applicable to TAS equipment, including NEC, IEC, ASME, AISC, AWS, UMC, OSHA, and building codes.
Self‑starter and highly skilled SolidWorks designer capable of performing all design and SolidWorks modeling tasks required for production‑level drawings with limited direction.
Relevant Work Experience
8+ years of mechanical, structural, electrical, and controls design experience relevant to manufacture of TAS products.
SolidWorks experience required.
AutoCAD and Microsoft Office suite experience.
Experience in HVAC, piping design, and industrial plant design required.
Education and Training
High school diploma required.
Direct industry experience acceptable.
Associate's Degree in a technical discipline or graphics design is a plus.
Physical Requirements / Work Environment Position requires 80%–95% desk work with a computer. Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. Other activities include use of fingers, sitting, stooping, bending, crouching, talking, hearing, and repeated motions. Visual acuity requirements include color, depth perception, and field of vision necessary to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, and conduct extensive reading. The incumbent will be subject to interior environmental conditions.
