Job Description And Duties The primary responsibility of this position is to support the California Air Resources Board (CARB), Chair’s Office, and Executive Office in communicating information about CARB policies and programs to a variety of audiences (e.g., media, legislature, international, public, etc.), through written documents, presentations, press releases, websites, and other means. These programs are a vital component for reducing criteria pollutants, toxic air pollutants, and greenhouse gases by promoting the use of advanced and zero‑emission technology vehicles/equipment, accelerating turn over the fleet to cleaner technologies, and increasing access to clean transportation for low‑income households, disadvantaged communities, and low‑income communities.

Serving as Chief Editor and Plain Language Advisor, this position is responsible for drafting, reviewing and editing high‑profile external communications documents and content for readability and accuracy. The incumbent advises the Director of Communications and Deputy Director of Communications on plain language principles in work related to message planning, information materials, and outreach efforts in order to properly communicate CARB's technical and highly complex policies and programs to the public and to ensure their successful adoption and implementation. Works with CARB staff in the development of written materials for the public and serves as a plain language advocate, providing training and educational resources as needed.

This position is responsible for supporting CARB's efforts to ensure that all policies and programs are implemented and communicated in a coordinated manner to further CARB's mission and goals. This includes current policies, programs, and regulations like Clean Truck Check, Drive Forward, Community Air Protections Program, California Satellite Methane Project, as well as future policies, programs, and regulations. The position works closely with the CARB leaders and staff, including the Chair and Executive Director, to provide policy, technical, and outreach recommendations on their communications needs. The position will also prepare, review, and edit communications regarding technical and policy analyses, reports, and other materials across the broad spectrum of CARB’s work.
