The Northern Light is UAA’s student-run newspaper. TNL is hiring student workers for advertising representatives. If you are interested and have experience in the field of advertising, business, or journalism we invite you to apply.
The Northern Light advertising representative helps sell advertising for The Northern Light. They also help with public communications of the paper. Working for The Northern Light offers an unique opportunity for UAA students to learn about publishing and the news media. Staff have access to industry professionals, professional equipment, and chances to submit material for awards. The paper publishes stories online at www.thenorthernlight.org and in print – distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community.
To thrive in this role, applicants should have experience with customer service and processing transactions. Applicants should possess excellent communication and time management skills. Applicants should be team players who are good at giving and receiving constructive feedback. Applicants should have an understanding of how to use spreadsheets, experience with customer service and basic knowledge of graphic design. Applicants need to be comfortable with emailing and cold calling clients. File management and organization are important aspects to this job. Applicants should be interested in the news media and public relations.
Minimum Qualifications
Pay close attention to details and be able to follow strict deadlines.
Strong writing and research skills.
Experience with design software such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.
Eligibility Criteria
Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment.
Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters.
Have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA, be in good academic standing, or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.
Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
Provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.
Position reappointment is contingent upon successful progress toward degree completion and performance evaluation.
Position Details
This is a part-time position, 8 – 12 hours a week, student position paying $13.29 per hour.
This position is open to undergraduate students only.
