DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Houston Public Library (HPL) seeks an experienced, innovative, team‑oriented individual with a passion for customer service to serve as a Librarian II Manager at the Moody Neighborhood Library. The role involves leadership of the assigned library location(s), programs, and staff to ensure exceptional customer service in a fast‑paced public‑service setting.
- Providing and modeling exceptional public service and making the library a welcoming space for all through day‑to‑day operations.
- Leading and supervising assigned staff, providing timely and objective feedback, and fostering their learning and development.
- Overseeing creative and innovative programs and library services for all ages.
- Engaging with the community through outreach and developing collaborative relationships with local community organizations and key community members.
- Taking initiative to creatively solve problems and exercising sound decision‑making skills.
- Interacting with customers at the customer‑service desk to find information and library materials.
- Performing collection development and maintenance.
- Providing reference and reader‑advisory services to library customers.
- Serving as the person in charge.
- Required evenings and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) 8 am–8:15 pm shift work on a rotating basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting library materials up to 20 pounds. Must move freely throughout the library to file and retrieve materials. Effective oral and written communication is required.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Requires a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA‑accredited school.
• OR requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 18 hours toward an MLS from an ALA‑accredited school and two years of professional library experience. MLS must be completed within two years of hiring.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) years of library experience, including one (1) year of management experience.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Valid Driver’s License preferred; compliance with City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2‑2).
PREFERENCES

- Ability to plan, organize work, and prioritize.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
- Experience working with diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Knowledge of current versions of MS Office and Sirsi Symphony.
- Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) preferred.
- Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of duties.

Department may administer a skills assessment test.

SALARY INFORMATION
Salary is based on the candidate’s qualifications and pay rates of other employees in this classification. Pay Grade: 21
