POSITION SUMMARY The Director of Sacred Music & Organist performs as a lay ecclesial minister in support of the Diocese and the parish’s spiritual and pastoral mission; performs as a spiritual and administrative leader in the parish. This position is entrusted by the Pastor to provide and maintain careful organization, technical preparation, and prayerful execution of all liturgical music at St. Thomas the Apostle. In collaboration with the Pastor, and in keeping with the Church’s guiding principles, this position has the responsibility of promoting the full, conscious, and active participation of the faithful in liturgical celebrations. The Director is to maintain a high standard of quality and prayerful effectiveness of sacred music in service to the liturgy for the glorification of God and the sanctification of the faithful. Through collaborative and open communication, the Director and Pastor share a unified vision in the liturgical life of the parish to express in our lives and to manifest to others the mystery of Christ and the real nature of the true Church. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Must have a working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Diocese of Boise and be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church. Does not espouse any doctrine inconsistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Knowledge of Catholic liturgy, including liturgical documents and music resources. Knowledge of Roman Missal and Lectionary. Ability to stay current with all liturgical matters through professional development. Ability to maintain confidentiality and avoid conflict of interest. Ability to be a self-starter, motivated, and an energetic person who is able to take initiative in fulfilling tasks in a professional manner. Strong interpersonal communication skills needed to interact and work well with others. Solid organizational and planning skills. Strong leadership skills. Ability to work independently with little direct supervision and frequent interruptions. Ability to work collaboratively with the Pastor to coordinate liturgy and to develop goals and objectives for parish liturgies. Ability to schedule and conduct all music rehearsals; oversee all music events at the church. Ability to supervise, and organize all music volunteers and stipend musicians. Ability to recruit, audition, and train cantors, choir members, and other musicians. Ability to plan weekly and seasonal music selections for liturgies, incorporating liturgical, pastoral, and musical judgements. Ability to communicate with and arrange schedules for all liturgical music volunteers. Ability to coordinate and lead choir composed of musicians from other parishes. Ability to conduct and lead all choirs at any liturgical event, as necessary. Ability to utilize technology relative to the performance of designated areas of responsibility. Ability to meet qualifications of diocesan safe environment policies and successfully pass a criminal background check. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Coordinate, organize, and lead sacred music for liturgies (i.e. Sundays, Holy Days of Obligation, Feasts, etc.), special diocesan liturgies, weddings, and funerals, or other liturgical celebrations. Catechize the congregation and liturgical volunteers more about the role of sacred music within the liturgy. Maintain and improve the quality of musicianship of all volunteers to be effective leaders of prayer and song. Seek efforts to enhance the active participation of the congregation through the liturgy. Present more opportunities for prayer services with music to increase congregation’s opportunity to experience music as a powerful devotional. Collaborate with Pastor and staff to actualize the New Evangelization using new methods, ardor, and expressions. Oversee production of parish worship materials. Oversee copyright licensing and usage reporting weekly. Act as a resource person for liturgical ministers, staff, school faculty, and parish community. Other tasks, projects, duties assigned or delegated by the Pastor. QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience in music, sacred music, vocal training, and/or music education. A minimum of 3 years of demonstrated success leading liturgical music for a parish or other ecclesiastical institution or organization. Demonstrated ability to play multi-tiered pipe organ with multiple stops and foot pedals. Additional Qualifications Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills must be a self-starter, well-organized and a team player. Ability to delegate when appropriate.
