POSITION SUMMARY

These duties typically do not require the application of academic training in library principles and procedures at the full professional level. The Library Technician classification is distinguished from Library Branch Assistants or Clerks in that it has a greater level of responsibility, complexity of duties assigned, and latitude in decision-making.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works under the general direction of a Senior Librarian who issues assignments and instructions but has some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. Supervision is exercised by the Public Service Coordinator or ITC Coordinator.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversight is exercised over Central Services Pages in assigned service area in the absence of the Senior Librarian or Reference Librarian.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Upon assignment a Library Technician may be given responsibility, with oversight by the Senior Librarian, for some of the operations in any of the following library services: system programming; processing materials; interlibrary loan service; special collections; and community outreach.
- Receives oral or written instructions from supervisor or Senior Librarian, organizes work according to established procedures and reports work accomplished to supervisor or Senior Librarian.
- Guides and assists with training of clerical staff or Library Branch Assistants in tasks for assigned service.
- Monitors, orders and receives supplies for assigned service.
- Assists in resolving customer service issues and responding to the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Establishes and maintains accurate records and files.
- Participate on assigned special projects.
- Operates integrated library system.
- Assists in developing procedures for assigned service.
- Operates standard office equipment.
- Provides customer service to patrons in library and over the phone and via email.
- May interpret library policies in assigned area to library staff and public.
- Participates in meetings, committees, webinars and workshops.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Creates and implements under the direction of the Senior Librarian, a regular schedule of programs and events as a part of a team for the Library system including researching, contacting and negotiating with potential program presenters and performers.
- Work with a minimum of supervision individually or as a part of a group or team and regularly take personal initiative to execute work responsibilities.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Provide excellent customer service to the public, citizens, co-workers and other county employees.
- Facilitate and present programs at the branch locations as assigned by the Senior Librarian.
- Monitors program, including assisting branch staff with obtaining and preparing all necessary materials
- Develops and proposes new programs and special events in response to patron and community requests and needs.
- Regular travel to branches for the of execution scheduled programs.
- Supports the activities of system-wide services within assigned focus areas and trains staff on appropriate protocols, software and equipment.
- Coordinate Inter-Library Loan (ILL) services, other state level service providers and local libraries.
- Oversee operation of ILL service and coordinate ILL service at branches.
- Promotes increased usage of the Library within assigned service area.
- Weed library special collections under the guidelines of the professional librarians responsible for special collections.
- Aids patrons' informational needs in the Library for Assistive Media and Talking Books, the Michigan Room, St. Clair County Law Library, business collection and/or government documents.
- Actively participates in program development for patrons to develop business skills, knowledge of family history and legal resources through assistance with utilization of library materials and databases.
- Performs a variety of technical and clerical duties related to the ordering, receiving, cataloging, processing and maintenance of materials, both physical and digital, for the Library's collections and service.
- Assists public and library staff and troubleshoots basic technology issues and equipment.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, EDUCATION:
- Graduation from an accredited high school graduate or equivalent with some college course work and five years of library experience.
- Associate's degree with three years of related experience.
- Bachelor's degree with one year of related experience.
- The qualified candidate must obtain appropriate Library of Michigan certification within first year of employment.
- Knowledge of Library terminology
- Knowledge of Library materials and resources
- Knowledge of Integrated library systems and automatic material handling systems
- Knowledge of Library functions including circulation, reference, administration and technical services.
- Knowledge, interest and appreciation of literature and other sources of information available at the library.
- Experience with planning and implementing programs of interest to patrons of varying ages.
- Writing, reading, mathematical principles; proficient computer skills-Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook; exercise sound judgment and decision making in accordance with policies and procedures; ability to research and problem solve independently; knowledge of County operations and functions; ability to prioritize and time manage; handle stressful situations, provide effective and friendly customer service; support the County's mission and values; ability to think critically where necessary.
- Knowledge or understanding of basic administrative tasks: operate standard office equipment; document management; prepare and maintain records, various correspondences and reports; answer general inquiries and refer as necessary; answer telephone calls, process mail, order supplies/equipment; prepare meeting agendas, attend meetings, record/transcribe/distribute minutes; entering, transcribing, recording, storing or maintaining information in written or electronic form with speed and accuracy; maintain calendars, arrange meetings, schedule rooms and equipment as necessary.
