Position Purpose
CASE’s Writer/Editor identifies topics, issues, and story ideas of interest to CASE’s global audiences. The Writer/Editor develops compelling pieces to be published, packaged and deployed in support of CASE’s strategic efforts to serve and engage members, support new membership growth, and advance education around the world.
Essential Functions
The core functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:Program/Project Management
- Contribute to the development of compelling, timely, on-brand editorial content for a wide range of digital, print, and social channels. This involves researching and writing original content; commissioning and editing content from others (practitioners, members, staff); and shaping and redeveloping content packages to be deployed on multiple channels.
- Cultivate relationships with in-house subject matter experts, field practitioners, and thought leaders for content knowledge, story ideas, and sources.
- Adapt content (long and short form) into content packages as appropriate to audience and channel: digital, social, and print.
- Produce four to six original, feature-length articles per year, as assigned and on deadline.
- Commission two to four feature articles per year, as assigned and on deadline, including identifying appropriate content creator, providing guidance, editing drafts, guiding rewrites, and delivering edited copy.
- Develop short content (blog posts, member profiles, magazine departments).
- Ensure that the global interests of CASE members are reflected in the magazine, website, social, and other media.
- Contribute to the development Currents magazine, including writing and editing features, columns, captions, headlines and subheads, as well as editing and proofreading at various stages of magazine production.
- Stay informed of news and trends related to global education by reading publications, attending conferences as designated by supervisor and communicating directly with CASE staff and members, advancement practitioners, and subject matter experts.
- Identify writers and expert practitioners at all levels of the advancement profession and recruits them as authors and sources.
- Keep up with editorial details and paperwork, including queries, contracts, and other correspondence with authors, sources, and freelancers.
Fiscal Management/Budget Responsibilities/Judicious Use of Resources
- Exercises fiscal responsibility in the utilization of all CASE resources.
Liaison Responsibilities
- Works cooperatively and diplomatically with all divisions and regions.
- Liaises with CASE colleagues in other parts of the world to ensure the best sharing of ideas, expertise and knowledge.
- Incorporates tasks and/or projects related to objectives as directed by the CASE Strategic Plan.
Image Responsibilities
- In keeping with the CASE Values Statement, ensures that CASE is well represented by exercising a high degree of professionalism, accuracy, and ethics, in all activities, services, and products.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor.
Position Requirements
Education and Experience:
- An interest in and an understanding of educational advancement across the regions in which CASE works.
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Journalism or Communications.
- Three to five (3-5) years’ experience in diversified editorial development and communications role.
- Previous experience in higher education is a plus.
Skills and Abilities:
- A demonstrated interest in advancing education to transform lives and society.
- A strong commitment to contributing to an organizational culture that celebrates diversity and inclusion.
- An understanding and interest in engaging with a broad range of cultures and countries.
- Must have technical proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and familiarity with publishing tools like Adobe Creative Suite. Experience working within a web CMS (such as Drupal) a plus.
- Outstanding writing and editing skills; strong knowledge of grammar and syntax; substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading skills, with exceptional attention to detail. Familiarity with Associated Press style guide a plus.
- Strategic and creative thinker with proven problem-solving skills.
- Ability to conceptualize and produce material for multiple platforms.
- Good interpersonal skills and proven ability to work independently, within a team, and with high-level sources and contributors around the world.
- Interest in and experience with global and cross-cultural issues and engagement. Knowledge of education and advancement is highly desirable.
- Time oriented; ability to meet deadlines consistently.
- Strong organization, planning, and project management skills.
- A proactive and can-do attitude, even when working under pressure and with all levels of staff.
