The Lynchburg Public Library is seeking a Librarian for the Youth Services

Provide excellent customer service as a professional librarian in an urban library environment. The ideal candidate will be a creative, flexible, dynamic professional who is passionate about engaging children, teens, and families in a welcoming library environment. Candidate must be able to work independently and alone when scheduled. Must be available to work days, evenings and weekends. Must bring a sense of humor, an innovative mindset, and a high attention to detail to their work. This position will have opportunities to work at all library locations as well as public engagement events.

Essential Duties Examples of Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Brings a high level of customer service experience and skills to create a library environment that is welcoming to all patrons Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of children's and young adult literature, literacy development, and current trends in youth services Builds positive, respectful relationships with children, teens, caregivers, and educators, fostering a sense of belonging and curiosity in an urban library setting Assists young patrons and caregivers in the use of the library's print and digital collections, databases, and online resources Provides reader's advisory and research support Plans, develops, and presents engaging programs for children, teens and families (infancy through high school) that promote literacy, learning, and creativity at all library locations and other community locations Actively supports the Youth Services Supervisor in developing, implementing, and evaluating youth and teen programs Participates in public engagement events with the library and the City, and represents the library in outreach services to daycares, schools, and neighborhood centers Assists patrons in all library departments when needed, answering informational and directional questions, performing circulation and reference tasks to patrons of all ages Collaborates on collection development with a team, including recommending books for purchase, evaluating, selecting, and weeding materials based on community needs, professional reviews, and available funds; considers reader and community interests and emerging trends Stays current with technologies, digital literacy tools, social media, artificial intelligence, and integrates them appropriately into library services and outreach Engages in professional development opportunities, webinars, workshops, and continuing education opportunities ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends and various library locations Collaborates with other library staff members and City employees on special projects When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May train and supervise clerical and/or paraprofessional staff in specific tasks.

Minimum Education and Experience Required QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution required. Prior public library experience working with children and/or teens strongly recommended. Demonstrated work presenting programming to children and families in an educational setting is required.

Additional Requirements

Possession of valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an acceptable driving record that meets the criteria of the City. Relevant background checks must be completed and approved. Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
