Job Summary The City of Greenbelt is seeking a highly motivated and detail‑oriented Communications Specialist I and II (Emergency Police Dispatcher) to join our Police Department team. This position serves as the critical link between the community and emergency services, ensuring timely and accurate communication during emergencies and routine calls.
Key Responsibilities
Answer emergency (911) and non‑emergency calls promptly and professionally.
Assess situations and determine appropriate response actions.
Dispatch police, fire, and EMS units using Computer‑Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems.
Provide pre‑arrival instructions to callers when necessary.
Maintain accurate records of calls and dispatched units.
Operate multiple communication systems, including radios and telephones.
Assist in coordinating response efforts during major incidents or disasters.
Uphold confidentiality and security of sensitive information.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred).
Strong verbal communication skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
Proficiency in multitasking and computer systems.
Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Prior experience in emergency dispatch or public safety communications is desirable.
Qualified Applicants Must
Not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
Pass a comprehensive background check.
Work a schedule that may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
Be able to come in for their assigned shift during inclement weather.
