Authorization Coordinator San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living (SFCJL) is a center of excellence in providing a continuum of care. It includes the Frank Residences, offering luxurious assisted living and memory care services; the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center, featuring long-term skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation, and an acute psychiatric unit specialized in mental healthcare for older adults over age 55; and the Jewish Home and Senior Living Foundation.

The Authorization Coordinator plays a key role in supporting our residents’ care and our organization’s revenue cycle by coordinating, tracking, and maintaining insurance authorizations. This position follows up with payers, ensures required documentation is in place, and maintains accurate and compliant records for authorizations and related medical information.

Key Responsibilities

Follow up with payers, including insurance companies and patients, regarding the status of previously submitted authorizations.

Verify payer authorization requirements and ensure timely submission of all required clinical documentation.

File incoming orders or upload documentation to resident records per established workflows.

Maintain comprehensive authorization files and control records documenting correspondence, approvals, timelines, and updates.

Review and interpret payer correspondence to determine urgency, next steps, and required actions.

Compose professional correspondence requesting medical records, clinical updates, or additional authorization-related information.

Respond to internal and external requests for the release of medical information, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and applicable regulatory standards.

Prepare, copy, and provide selective extracts of medical records as required by payers or regulatory bodies.

Coordinate with supervisory personnel, clinical teams, admissions, and billing to resolve authorization-related issues and prevent service delays.

Compile data and supporting materials required for payer reviews or special authorization requests.

Track authorization timelines, expirations, and required extensions to prevent gaps in coverage or billing denials.

Collaborate with billing and clinical departments to ensure complete authorization documentation accompanies claims.

Maintain detailed logs, notes, and tracking reports of authorization activity and outcomes.

Deliver exceptional customer service to residents, families, internal partners, and external payers.

Stay current on payer guidelines, authorization rules, and industry best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree preferred.

2–4 years of experience in skilled nursing authorization processing, healthcare insurance verification, or coordination of benefits preferred.

Strong understanding of payer authorization requirements, insurance processes, and medical terminology.

Experience working with medical records and protected health information (PHI).

Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Strong attention to detail, organization, and thorough documentation practices.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
