This is a seasonal position intended to last for a limited assignment up to six (6) months from date of hire.

Make an impact:

The City of Salem Public Library is seeking energetic, detail-oriented high school students who are interested in serving their community as library employees. The Salem Public Library’s mission is to serve its community by promoting and providing opportunities for full and equal access to information and ideas, the love of reading, the joy of learning, and engagement with the arts, sciences and humanities in a safe and comfortable environment.

What you will do:

Library Program Aides are responsible for assisting with circulation tasks such as shelving returned materials, pulling items from lists, and processing returned materials. Successful candidates will have excellent organizational skills and a strong attention to detail to ensure accurate shelving. This position requires afternoon and weekend availability.

The successful candidates enjoy communicating and working with diverse customers and staff, adapt to changing priorities, and have excellent organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail. The Library Program Aides work under the direction of a lead worker or supervisor.

Additional information on job responsibilities:

  • Shelve library materials with accuracy using alphabetical and Dewey Decimal Library systems.
  • Collect books used in the library and return them to shelves.
  • Collect materials from the book return and assist with checking in materials.
  • Check shelves for correct placement of books.
  • Retrieve items from a list to fulfil patron requests or to assist with collection maintenance.
  • Activity involving exertion, including lift up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects with or without accommodation.
  • Perform tasks that may require the incumbent to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, use manual dexterity, perform repetitive motions, grasp, and feel with or without accommodation.
  • Receive detailed information through oral or alternative forms of communication.
  • Use visual acuity or equivalent strategies to organize and shelve library materials with a high level of accuracy.
  • Assist with other related work duties as assigned.

What are the minimum qualifications?

  • Must pass the pre-employment background check and drug test (including marijuana).
  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Current standing as a high school student.
  • Any school or work experience and/or equivalent combination of training that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
