About The Role We provide our clients with a comprehensive view of strategic communications that leverages our integrated suite of services, including financial communications, corporate reputation, transaction communications, digital communications, AI, data science and public affairs in all the major markets around the world.
Our Corporate Positioning and Insights team is looking for a Managing Director with expertise in corporate reputation/corporate communications who will be both a lead and a team player in the day‑to‑day management of client accounts, pursuit of new business and firm initiatives.
This person will align with the Corporate Positioning and Insights team, which partners with our clients to design and execute multi‑stakeholder campaigns that build confidence, enhance positioning and help elicit action among key stakeholder groups. We help organizations in highly regulated industries define their corporate narrative and use strategic communications to protect and promote their license to operate. Our team’s work also includes ongoing issues management, reputational risk mitigation as well as a suite of services focused on data science and research.
A successful Managing Director will be responsible for leading and growing business with current clients, surface new business leads and take a key role in pursuits. This individual will interact with and provide communications counsel to C‑suite and communications executives; develop and execute integrated communications strategies to deliver results and meet client expectations; review and draft a variety of materials for client use; and actively participate in firm development and new business pursuits to help grow the sector. Coaching and mentoring early and mid‑career colleagues is an important part of the Managing Director role to ensure all team members have the skills and tools to perform well at their level.
What You’ll Do Client Delivery
Develop and lead clients’ integrated multi‑stakeholder communications strategies to help position companies and executives
Focus communications strategies that are focused digital platforms and informed by analytics and FTI’s AI and data science capabilities
Serve as the day‑to‑day client contact for multiple accounts, anticipating client needs with minimal oversight and ensuring work is delivered on‑time and on‑budget
Oversee client budgets, business strategy, and be accountable for client account profitability
Develop corporate narratives, key messages and talking points to bring our clients’ stories to life
Write and edit a variety of internal and external materials for clients such as strategy memos, presentations, press releases, talking points, emails, web content, etc., with strong attention to detail
Counsel clients about industry developments, trends and issues
Surface opportunities within clients that draw on additional FTI capabilities
Ensure all work undertaken by FTI professionals is in line with FTI’s values, Code of Ethics and the Strategic Communications Rules of Practice and lives these commitments daily
Business Development
Generate and lead new business development efforts
Meet FTI’s quantitative expectations for utilization, new business generation and account management
Maintain strong relationships with clients
Identify emerging opportunities to add more value for the client
Lead and participate in the generation of new business proposals and presentations
Cultivate an internal and external network, and identify areas where you/the team can support
Possess, develop and maintain relationships with applicable journalists/media outlets, trade associations and relevant industry leaders to enhance and grow business
Support the development and delivery of thought leadership surrounding emerging trends and issues that impact a company’s communications, such as Sustainability/ESG, digitization, etc.
Work with junior and mid‑career staff as a leader and demonstrate mentoring ability, effectively manage individuals and teams, and foster a positive team culture
Anticipate potentially difficult situations and be able to evaluate strategies and alternatives with senior management
Effectively manage competing demands for time
How You’ll Grow Direct access to leadership with defined long‑term career planning will ensure you continue to develop your skills as a communications and change management practitioner. This position also allows the unique opportunity to partner with internal teams in various specialty areas to tackle a myriad of high visibility client challenges and learn about different practices within FTI’s business. With an emphasis on a collaborative team approach, we all learn from each other as we share diverse perspectives and ways of working to best meet client challenges and continue to grow the firm.
What You Will Need To Succeed Basic Qualifications
Minimum 10 years of work experience at a communications agency or a relevant in‑house communications team
Travel required to clients/prospects and to FTI office(s)
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated track record of account leadership and growth
Experience working with and a passion for retail and consumer goods companies
Commercial mindset that balances maintaining/growing existing clients with pursuing new accounts
Interest in flexing beyond traditional corporate communications to work on and drive multidisciplinary accounts
Experience leading teams, and serving as a coach/mentor for staff
Superior writing, editing and researching skills
Desire and ability to work in a fast‑paced, multi‑tasking, deadline‑oriented dynamic environment with regular change
Proven project management skills and the ability to proactively support/counsel key client relationship
Demonstrated development of a professional network
Experience with media database tools and pitching media to secure client coverage
Advanced proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel and Word
