Base pay range $55,000.00/yr - $70,000.00/yr
The Baltimore Sun, Maryland’s largest daily newspaper and a trusted source of news since 1837, is seeking a page designer with good news judgment and knowledge of advertising production. We are investing in our journalism, with the print paper and the eNewspaper product a part of that strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
Design news, feature and sports pages that are visually engaging and emphasize the most important stories of the day.
Work closely with topic editors to understand content priorities, reflect them appropriately in layout and apply feedback quickly and accurately.
Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator; also skilled with The Sun’s Protecmedia editorial software to design print and eNewspaper, leveraging AI for workflow efficiencies.
Plan content placement for print and eNewspaper, ensuring smooth workflow, accurate lineups and consistent visual storytelling across platforms, while meeting deadlines.
Review proofs for editorial accuracy, visual clarity and overall balance; improve display type and correct grammar on deadline.
Coordinate ad placements with the advertising department, sometimes filling duties of page production and layout specialist, paginating all print products to include editorial, advertising and classified pages/elements.
Troubleshoot ad issues using systems such as Output Systems, Ad order entry, Editorial, Creative Services systems, Layout, and Classified platforms.
Job includes night and weekend work.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, graphic design or related field preferred.
1–3 years of experience in newspaper or editorial design (internships included), with evidence of strong news judgment in design samples or previous work.
Ability to learn new technologies quickly.
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite.
Comfort working on deadline with shifting priorities — and the editorial intuition to adapt as news develops.
Ability to collaborate with editors while maintaining confidence in layout decisions based on journalistic value.
Flexible schedule availability, including nights and weekends.
Familiarity with AP Style and newspaper production workflows.
