HLAA’s programs and events are designed to provide tools for individuals to live more successfully with hearing loss. The organization’s mission is to open the world of communication to people with hearing loss by offering information, education, support, and advocacy.
Role Description
This full-time role is ideal for a journeyman designer who thrives in a collaborative nonprofit environment and is passionate about accessibility, inclusion, and impactful visual storytelling.
Reporting to the Director of Communications and Marketing, you will lead the design and production of digital and print media for HLAA’s core program, outreach and fundraising efforts. You’ll also be HLAA’s go-to expert for protecting and evolving the organization’s visual identity while ensuring our content is accessible and engaging for diverse audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor and evolve HLAA’s visual brand identity across all channels.
Establish and manage internal processes for graphic design requests, including request intake, budgeting and vendor coordination.
Design and produce the visual assets for Hearing Life, our quarterly magazine, three annual fundraising campaigns, in-person Walk4Hearing events and our annual convention, educational and conversion-focused emails, a website undergoing rapid modernization, social media platforms, with a special focus on video content, advertising and marketing resources to present to partners, and board presentations and annual mission reports
Assist the team in applying website and email best practices, with a strong focus on modernization and responsive design.
Create video and graphic assets for major social media platforms.
Organize and manage HLAA’s image and media asset library.
Develop engaging narrative content tailored to: Children with hearing loss and their parents, Adults with hearing loss, Health care, research, and assistive technology industry professionals
Create educational visuals that clearly explain complex scientific and technological concepts to the above audiences.
Train staff on accessibility best practices, brand guidelines, and use of templates for presentations and outreach.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Communications, or related field.
3-5 years of professional design experience.
3+ years supporting the communication of technical information about health care, technology, research or related content.
Proficiency with premium graphic design and video editing software.
Familiarity with accessibility standards and inclusive design principles.
Strong understanding of the roles of color theory and typography in storytelling.
Experience creating platform-preferred content for major social media channels.
Excellent organizational and project management skills, including experience with cloud-based project management software like Asana.
Passion for hearing health, disability advocacy, or inclusive communication.
Adobe software suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to persuade, inspire, and inform.
Collaborative team player who can manage across teams and build trust with staff, affiliates, volunteers, and stakeholders.
Advanced proficiency with MS Office and communications/digital platforms.
Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Travel to annual HLAA Convention required.
