Shannon Library Public Services Manager – University of Virginia
The University of Virginia Library invites applications for a Shannon Library Public Services Manager to support the Information Services and Spaces team. The ISS team provides our patrons with access to collections, resources, and spaces, as well as high-quality service.
Working in the ISS team, this position manages the Shannon Library circulation desks while supervising library staff and student workers. It works with the Director of ISS to set the vision for public services in the newly renovated Shannon Library, coordinates with other public service managers, and ensures the library runs smoothly and facilitates access to information. The position reports to the Director of ISS and is exempt.
Responsibilities
Manage Shannon Library circulation desk (35%)
Manage two circulation desks in the Shannon Library, distributing information about desk policies and procedures to staff and student assistants, and ensuring the building is open and closed according to the schedule.
Work with the ISS team to coordinate circulation policies, procedures, and documentation, continually reviewing these processes.
Coordinate daily building operations with the ISS team, set library hours, enter hours in the online calendar, manage door locking and card swipe access, and create signage.
Supervise full‑time staff (20%)
Supervise two full‑time staff positions (Night Manager and Library Coordinator).
Manage employee workflows, set clear expectations, provide constructive feedback, conduct interim and year‑end evaluations, and mentor staff for growth and career development.
Supervise student assistants (20%)
Recruit, interview, hire, train, and supervise a large group (up to 30+) student assistants, creating and monitoring student schedules via the online system and coordinating with Night Managers for consistent supervision.
Manage the student worker budget within the Shannon Library cost center.
Direct patron services (15%)
Provide excellent direct circulation and basic reference customer service, explaining, interpreting, and enforcing policies and procedures, granting exceptions when appropriate, and resolving problems to the satisfaction of patrons and the library.
Cross‑area teamwork and special duties (10%)
Cross‑train ISS staff to ensure sufficient backup staffing.
Collaborate on communication, planning, and problem solving with Facilities staff, LEO/ILL staff, IT staff, Financial Services staff, and other departments outside the library.
Perform special duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Library Science or another academic discipline.
At least 5 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
5+ years of library or customer service experience.
2+ years of direct supervisory experience, including goal setting, coaching, and performance evaluations.
Experience supervising both full‑time staff and student workers.
Experience hiring federal work study students.
Experience managing a budget.
Experience with integrated library systems and other library technology solutions.
Experience creating training resources and providing training to staff.
Ability to articulate a public services vision for a modern academic research library.
Physical Demands
Ability to push a full book cart and lift 15 pounds. Primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. Occasional travel to meet for meetings or programs.
Anticipated Hiring Range
$80,000 – $90,000, commensurate with education and experience.
