Albertsons‑Safeway's Northern California Division has an opening for a Communications Manager. The Manager of Public Affairs and Communications is responsible for developing and managing internal and external communications and public affairs strategies for the Division. In this role, you will team with the department’s director to support the Northern California Division of Safeway, which consists of more than 34,000 associates and over 280 stores across Northern California, Northern Nevada, and Hawaii, under four banners, including Andronico’s, Safeway, Pak N Save, and Vons. This is an exciting, fast‑paced, multifaceted and highly rewarding role in which you will have the opportunity to celebrate and inspire our associates, make a real difference in our communities, and learn and grow as a communications professional.

Key Responsibilities

Develop content and implement strategies that support the Division’s business objectives through a variety of internal and external communications vehicles such as Division communications and social media.

Create internal communications and content that tells the story of our associates to drive engagement and morale via our social media platform – NorCal Proud on Facebook, LinkedIn, Breakroom TVs and other mediums.

Lead and manage the retail store community engagement strategy and partner with regional and store retail leadership to effectively engage the community and highlight community partnerships.

Manage, coordinate, track and measure the results of Safeway Foundation fundraising initiatives and campaigns, as well as local charitable giving, including budget reporting.

Develop proactive and reactive messaging and media materials including press releases, communications plans, talking points, FAQ, media statements, web content and presentations.

Oversee funding request process for the Foundation’s We Care program and the Division’s committee to assist associates in times of crisis.

Work cross‑functionally with the Division’s Associate Resource Groups for initiatives and lead the communication strategy to amplify associate recognition efforts.

Represent the company and build relationships with non‑profit partners and key community members at relevant company and community events.

Work closely with the Director of Public Affairs and Communications on local or corporate initiatives as assigned and gain experience in the department’s government affairs, media relations and crisis management responsibilities.

Serve as the primary liaison and point of contact for the department for internal and external parties.

Skills

Exceptional communication abilities, including writing, speaking and active listening.

Strong writing, editing, proofreading, layout, and design skills.

Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to develop and maintain effective business relationships within the company and community.

Highly organized with strong sense of urgency and ability to meet time sensitive, and at times, urgent deadlines.

Stellar storytelling and content development skills, including key positioning, messaging and communication materials.

Superior technical skills such as filming and editing videos, taking photos, and creating basic graphics using common apps and programs.

Creativity and ability to generate innovative content ideas.

Proficiency in managing social media platforms: Facebook and LinkedIn.

Professional understanding of crisis management.

Ability to effectively engage with team members of all levels and across departments.

Great project management skills, including time management, multitasking and prioritization.

Possesses advanced PC and digital literacy skills including knowledge of standard MS Office tools.

Qualifications/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, business or related field.

Minimum of 5 years of related experience in public relations, media relations and/or communications.

Experience in crisis communications and/or reputation management with a deep understanding of how to use external communications to enhance reputation.

Previous experience in the food, grocery or retail industry is preferred.

Experience in communicating and interacting with retail store operations a plus.

Understanding of today’s communications environment amongst earned, owned, social and paid media.

Knowledge of video production, editing and content creation preferred.

Ability to create media pitches, experience working with media and familiarity with media relationship programs like Muck Rack, Meltwater and Cision a plus.

Note: this is an onsite five days per week position at Safeway NorCal headquarters in Pleasanton, Calif.

Ability to occasionally travel to stores and community events across Northern California.

Salary range is $92,000 to $120,000 annually.
