Position Summary
The Copywriter and Content Lead is a strategic communicator and writer who leads content development and monitors growing trends in the nonprofit, education, and social sectors. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys connecting the work of subject matter experts with external storytelling. Someone who thrives on transforming ideas, research, and field insights into clear, compelling content that drives influence, learning, and engagement will excel in this role.
The Copywriter and Content Lead will own the development of core written content that communicates our organizational perspective, thought leadership, and programmatic learning. You will collaborate across teams to capture and shape high-quality resources, from white papers and case studies to blog posts, toolkits, and briefs, that reflect our voice and vision. You will also work closely with program and development teams to ensure written materials align with and support business development efforts.
This role will be responsible for monitoring the nonprofit, education, philanthropy, and social sector landscape for emerging trends and breaking news, and keep the team across the organization informed. Able to synthesize and move at a fast pace, while managing multiple priorities and cross-functional relationships, this role is essential to the growth and advancement of the organization’s brand.
Responsibilities Content Development & Project Management (70%): Develop or review high-quality, strategic, and values-aligned long-form content (white papers, research briefs, thought leadership pieces, grant proposals, board and external reports, case studies) in collaboration with program staff. Serve as the lead writer and editor for major public-facing written products. Develop or review high-quality short-form content (mass emails, blog posts, talking points, scripts, presentations). Ensure consistent branding, messaging, and storytelling throughout all materials. Lead project management initiatives to ensure delivery of content with timelines and processes. Collaborate with subject matter experts to develop success metrics for project-based content and external engagement, measure and track. Translate complex ideas, research findings, and program learnings into accessible resources. Collect, develop, and maintain a repository of stories, results, and frameworks reflecting our values and impact.
Trend Tracking & Insight Sharing (20%): Build and maintain a content library of existing materials and research. Monitor emerging trends in education, workforce development, philanthropy, and evidence-based practices to advance the brand and enable real-time engagement. Incorporate industry trends into written materials. Develop tools and processes to facilitate staff sharing of knowledge and access to key messages and resources.
Other (10%): Contribute to strategic and communications planning around campaigns, events, and high-visibility content moments. Maintain content calendars and related processes. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications 7-10 years of experience in copywriting and editing, communications, journalism, and content development in the research, data, technology, social, and/or education sectors.
Demonstrated knowledge of nonprofit, education, and technology policy.
Demonstrated willingness to use and learn new technologies for communication.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Exceptional writing and editing skills, especially with long-form and narrative formats.
Ability to distill complexity into clear, engaging, structured communication; data visualization skills are a plus.
Adept at working across teams, managing multiple deadlines, and maintaining quality under pressure.
Understanding of how content supports influence, visibility, and development outcomes.
High proficiency in Google and Microsoft software (Docs/Word, Slides/PowerPoint, Sheets/Excel), Asana, and Salesforce.
Proficient in using technology with curiosity and willingness to learn new systems.
Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and problem-solving skills.
Comfort with ambiguity and ability to navigate evolving priorities in a dynamic environment.
Work Environment Virtual Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively in a remote environment with team members across multiple time zones. Regular availability expected between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM (ET).
Workload Flexibility: Expect to work 40-50 hours per week, with fluctuations based on client and organizational demands.
Travel: Travel as needed to meet the organization’s needs.
Ability to come to the Boston office monthly/quarterly.
Physical Demands Ability to sit, talk, and listen for extended periods, up to 8 hours daily.
Requires typing for up to 4 hours.
Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds.
