The LAist newsroom is looking for an On‑Call Associate Producer to help grow our audience by creating engaging, useful, and inclusive social‑media content.
Position Responsibilities
Work with fellow social‑media producers to execute a cohesive strategy across LAist accounts, increasing reach and engagement.
Apply diversity, equity, and inclusion principles when editing, producing, and distributing journalism.
Identify shareable, newsworthy elements from stories and segments and transform them into native social media content, including video editing.
Post content that performs well organically during peak audience times.
Collaborate with Community Engagement, Marketing, Membership, Live Programming & Events, and broader Content teams on departmental projects.
Remain alert for news events or tips that surface via social media—DMs, trending topics— and keep the newsroom informed.
When directed by leadership, support breaking‑news coverage and distribution to stop misinformation.
Use evergreen archival content creatively.
Engage audiences when suitable to build a strong journalistic connection.
Additional duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience).
At least two years of production, editorial, or related experience.
Become and maintain a member in good standing with SAG‑AFTRA within 30 days of hire.
Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Proficient building and curating for a social‑media audience.
Video editing skills with CapCut, Adobe Premiere, or comparable tools.
Support an inclusive, diverse workplace.
Excellent writing—clean, concise, error‑free copy.
Sharp eye for spotting errors and typos.
Knowledge of social‑newsgathering, verification and spotting newsworthy chatter.
Familiar with analytics tools—Google Analytics, Hootsuite, Chartbeat—and data‑driven decisions.
Understanding of LAist voice, accurate sharing, and journalism ethics.
Knowledge of mainstream and emerging social platforms.
Quick learner for content management systems.
Can utilise Canva responsibly and ethically.
Intuitive sense for authentic participation in evolving conversations.
Awareness of Southern California local and regional news.
Preferred Skills / Experience
Fluency in Spanish or a language widely spoken in Southern California.
Knowledge of LA history and current events.
Journalistic experience.
Successful navigation of social media during breaking‑news events.

Compensation
Hourly rate: $35.00–$37.00, based on experience, education, and equitable compensation structure.
