The Communications Associate strengthens QPA’s storytelling, digital engagement, and public presence to amplify community voices, advance advocacy priorities, and support movement-building across Puget Sound and Washington State. This role designs and implements communications strategies that uplift our programs, campaigns, and partnerships, ensuring QPA’s messaging is accessible, trauma-informed, multilingual when possible, and grounded in intersectional queer justice. We advocate, educate, and organize to achieve economic housing, racial, and gender justice so that all can thrive.Our office is based in Seattle, and we work throughout the Puget Sound. QPA centers trans and nonbinary, BIPOC, working-class, disabled, immigrant, and youth community members. We lead programs focused on housing justice, community-owned data, civic engagement, leadership development, LGBTQIA+ protections, and economic and safety justice.We believe strong, accessible, and community-rooted communications are essential to building power. Key Responsibilities
Digital Communications & Content Creation (40%)
Create compelling content for social media, newsletters, website, and campaigns that reflects QPA’s values and community voice. Maintain QPA’s social media platforms with consistent, accessible, and engaging posts, including reels, graphics, stories, and live updates. Design visual content such as flyers, infographics, program materials, and fundraising graphics using Canva or similar tools. Support communications for programs including Advocacy & Policy, South King County LGBTQIA+ Collaborative, Strippers Are Workers, Housing Justice, Civic Engagement Cohort, and convenings. Email, Website & Internal Communications (25%)
Draft and send email newsletters, action alerts, and event invitations using Mailchimp or similar platforms. Update and maintain the QPA website with timely information, storytelling pieces, and resource pages. Develop internal templates, messaging guides, and communications processes to support organizational consistency and accessibility. Advocacy, Storytelling & Media (20%)
Support narrative development for campaigns on housing justice, LGBTQIA+ protections, civic engagement, labor rights, and data-driven policy. Assist in drafting policy briefs, press releases, talking points, op-eds, and public-facing materials. Build and maintain relationships with local media outlets, journalists, LGBTQIA+ outlets, and community radio stations. Support live coverage of events, forums, workshops, and community gatherings. Support communications needs for all fundraising campaigns, including Spring Campaign, GiveBig, Giving Tuesday, end-of-year ask, and the annual Powering Change gala. Create sponsor recognition materials, donor communications, digital campaigns, and event collateral. Assist with event promotion, run-of-show communications, and post-event recaps. Other duties as assigned Qualifications Required
2+ years in communications, digital organizing, marketing, storytelling, journalism, or related fields (professional or community-based). Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to tailor tone for different audiences and platforms. Experience creating social media content and managing accounts (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok). Graphic design experience (Canva required; Adobe Suite a bonus). Lived experience and/or direct involvement (paid or volunteer) within communities disproportionately impacted by systemic barriers, including LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, working-class, and people with disabilities. Ability to design accessible communications (plain language, image descriptions, readability awareness). Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines. Commitment to community-centered, trauma-informed, anti-racist, trans-affirming values. Preferred
Experience with Mailchimp, NationBuilder, or similar Customer Relationship Management/email platforms. Familiarity with housing justice, LGBTQIA+ policy issues, data storytelling, or harm reduction. Experience with community organizing, grassroots advocacy, or nonprofit communications. Multilingual skills in Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, Tagalog, or ASL are a plus. Salary: $62,000 – $66,000
depending on experience. Full-time, non-exempt position (35hours/week). Paid time off, holidays, and sick leave. In-person and hybrid schedule. Supportive, community-centered work environment.
