We are currently seeking an experienced Editor-in-Chief to join the team! The Editor-in-Chief manages the editorial content to meet quality and content objectives, including compliance with applicable state, federal, and international laws. The Editor-in-Chief supervises the overall publication process and recommends changes to policies in keeping with industry best practices.
What a day in the life of an Editor-in-Chief looks like:
Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Oversee acquisition of all optometry editorial content, including print and multimedia formats.
Manage editorial content to meet quality and content objectives, including compliance with all applicable state, federal, and international laws, such as the US Copyright Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
Review editorial submissions and perform as needed:
Identify substantive/structural edits, including clarification or reorganization of manuscript content;
Follow up and finesse suggested changes with authors;
Clarify meaning, polish language, and address other non-mechanics of style;
Identify potential instances of intellectual property theft or plagiarism.
Adhere to the company’s publishing systems and processing rules and guidelines.
Meet all production schedule deadlines.
Work with medical editors to identify upcoming editorial coverage and encourage contributors to submit articles in a timely manner.
Raise awareness with professional societies and other appropriate organizations.
Collaborate with Publisher to keep abreast of research activities and advances in the field and suggest possible future topics.
Uphold the Brand’s customer service standards and provide prompt responses to authors and inquiries.
Maintain open and frequent dialogue with Publisher and staff.
Manage the performance of assigned staff, including training, mentoring, evaluation, and development.
Meet with key opinion leaders and keep abreast of advances in designated field.
Oversee all publishing aspects for assigned titles.
Establish and maintain ongoing news coverage of assigned field, including output of news to print and electronic media.
What we expect from qualified candidates:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in English, journalism, communications, or related field
5–7 years of medical writing and editing experience
Previous experience in reviewing or authoring articles for publication
Strong command of the English language, including grammar and syntax
Demonstrated experience with AMA Style
Thorough knowledge of publishing (print and web/electronic)
Thorough knowledge of Word, InDesign (or other typesetting program), and web publishing platforms
Knowledge of the vision care/optometry field preferred
Work may require occasional travel (5–20%), possibly to include weekend and/or evening hours.
