As a Senior Designer, you serve a critical role in leading the project design efforts. You must understand a project's complex parameters and transform them into a clear and comprehensive solution. You must effectively apply a combination of strong communication skills (graphic and verbal), creativity, and the ability to problem-solve to achieve the project design goals and objectives. As a Senior Designer, you must interact directly and effectively with design principals, directors, clients, and other project team members. You must possess a high-level understanding of design-related code and safety requirements, as well as have a strong understanding of building systems, materials, and construction techniques.
Primary Responsibilities
Business Development / Marketing
Support Business Development and Marketing with specific components of RFQ/RFP as required
In collaboration with Marketing, prepare presentations for project pursuits as required
Participate in project interviews as required
Develop site capacity studies and/or design documents as required
Attendance at industry events (i.e., conferences, workshops, seminars)
Project Set-up
Set up project directory within F Drive
Collaborate with the Project Manager to file all critical project correspondence within project filing system
Support the Project Architect to establish Revit model based on templates and project specific requirements
Programming / Entitlement Through Jurisdictional Approvals
Lead the design efforts of one or more project designs (contingent on size and complexity of project) from commencement through jurisdictional approval.
Communicate design staff and project schedule requirements to Directors & Principals
Establish design concepts and criteria with Design Directors & Principals
Communicate design concepts and criteria to supporting design team members
Responsible for design-related tasks such as:
Programming or site studies, as required
Space Planning
Architectural Development (Interior & Exterior)
Prepare design documents such as Site Plans, Floor Plans, Sections, Elevations, and 3D Perspectives utilizing design software, including:
SketchUp
Revit
AutoCAD
Adobe Suite
Rendering software (Enscape or Twin Motion)
AI Engines
Energy Modeling Software & Plugins
Prepare and as required, deliver design presentations
Supervise design drawings produced by Project Designers, Designers and Emerging Professionals
Coordinate building design with consultants, as required
Collaborate with and support the Project Manager with design related requirements of the adjacency having jurisdiction
Collaborate with Interior designers
Meet project deadlines and schedules
Design to the project budget requirements, and propose alternatives as required
Coordinate design intent with production team
Bidding / Construction Administration / Close-out
Support Construction Administrator as required
Administrative
Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members
Continued development of presentation and public speaking skills
Requirements
10–20 years in an architectural firm
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited program
Focus on high-density housing (student housing and senior living experience strongly preferred; single-family residential experience not applicable)
DSA experience a plus
California Architect license preferred but not required
Physical Standards
Positions in this class are situated in a standard office environment, resulting in little exposure to the weather and requiring no unusual physical abilities. Other requirements include:
Near and visual acuity to interpret written documentation, reading very small print, maintains accurate records, recognize people and provide direction.
Use of hands for simple and firm grasping, as well as, fine manipulating ability to reach and handle equipment, records, and reports.
Higher-level cognitive skills to move quickly from one task to another and to attend to detail. Able to concentrate and set priorities despite distractions.
Speaking and hearing skills to converse verbally by telephone, in writing, and in person in an appropriate fashion, to ensure customers and employees are properly addressed in a precise manner.
Ability to travel as needed for client presentations, conferences, or business development meetings.
This hybrid role is available in either our Newport Beach or San Diego office.
