Senior Managing Editor (Part-Time) – Joint Commission Working under the guidance of the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editors, the Senior Managing Editor oversees the day-to-day administrative functions for the print and online Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety. The role serves as primary point of contact for the Publisher (Elsevier), manages submissions, coordinates peer review, and ensures high editorial and production quality. Responsibilities Handle day-to-day administrative, business, correspondence, and other support functions for the journal. Primary point of contact with the journal’s Publisher. Assist editorial leadership—including the Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editors, Associate Editors, Assistant Editors, and Editorial Advisory Board—in meeting the journal’s goals, coordinating meetings, and managing author and reviewer correspondence. Handle contracting and payments to external editors. Review submissions to determine content and language standards. Coordinate peer review invitations, monitor reviewer responses, and communicate reviewer comments to authors. Contract and oversee assistant editor team for article reviews. Create and maintain a robust reviewer database. Ensure editorial standards for substantive editing, revision, and proofreading of all accepted articles. Monitor AI tool disclosures in articles and ensure compliance with policy. Address complex technical content—tables, figures, photographs, line art—and ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency. Ensure quality of published articles, editorials, letters, multimedia content for the website. Edit certain articles when directed by editorial leadership. Act as liaison for journal production with editorial leadership and Publisher. Coordinate day‑to‑day production issues, scheduling, and web posting for individual articles and issues. Gather and track journal metrics, maintain dashboard of article flow, timeliness, peer review, financials. Collaborate with Production during copyediting, typesetting, proofreading; review copyeditor’s changes and answer proofreaders’ queries. Ensure author edits are incorporated by Production. Direct print and digital layout of tables and figures to meet design standards. Assemble issues, craft Tables of Contents and write blurbs for all accepted articles. Participate in marketing and public relations: conceptualize, create, secure multimedia content, review promotional copy and press releases. Create and promote social media content to highlight key articles. Qualifications Equivalent knowledge to that acquired through a bachelor’s degree in English or journalism. 5–7 years of experience managing peer review and production for a scholarly health‑science journal; experience with an online manuscript submission system. Excellent written and oral communication skills; succinct, professional. Strong substantive editing skills; ability to articulate content development needs in diverse healthcare areas. Strong time‑management skills; attention to detail; can manage multiple projects under pressure. Interpersonal skills to work with internal staff and external authors, reviewers, experts. Professionalism, high standards, assertiveness, integrity, discriminating judgment.
