Geotechnical Design Manager
Responsibilities
- Manage a small team of Project Geotechnical Engineers during the Tender phase, the design phase and the construction phase.
- Support conceptual design, engineering analysis, procurement and construction of major infrastructure projects from a geotechnical perspective (highways, bridges, tunnels, underground works, and other heavy civil works).
- Supervise technical work, perform high-level reviews of design calculations, and ensure geotechnical studies are prepared and reviewed appropriately.
- Review and propose field investigations during Tender or construction (geotechnical borings, field testing, geophysical investigations, laboratory testing, etc.).
- Review specialized geotechnical reports with emphasis on roadway works, including ground characterization, foundations, temporary supports, ground improvement, embankment and slope design, subgrade design under pavement, retaining wall and sound wall foundations, soil/rock reinforcement, and underground excavations.
- Analyze ground movement predictions, construction impact assessments, and mitigation strategies for geotechnical risks.
- Propose and analyze instrumentation systems for monitoring ground movement and implementation.
- Develop a schedule for geotechnical activities (site investigations, design deliverables).
- Provide support to the design team at the Project level from tender/concept design through design basis and detailed design phases.
- Coordinate with Client/Owner and Designer’s geotechnical specialists to address complex geotechnical topics and collaborate with parties to resolve issues.
- Ensure geotechnical designs comply with Ferrovial Group standards, contract requirements, and applicable geotechnical standards.
- Contribute to the Risk matrix and internal project documentation from a geotechnical perspective during Tender stages.
- Ensure geotechnical principles are understood and applied, including soil-structure interaction modelling.
- Review work of junior geotechnical engineers and external Consultants as needed.
- Support the creation of analytical 2D/3D models and FEM models when directed by the Design Manager.
- Ensure accuracy of geotechnical inputs to the Bill of Quantities (BOQ) and assist other departments in explaining geotechnical rationale where needed.
- Assist in negotiating geotechnical engineering fees and scope with Consultants.
- Support the Construction Technical Office with geotechnical-related matters during construction, as applicable.
- Assist in hiring additional Geotechnical Engineers during the Detailed Design phase as part of the design team.
- Other duties as applicable.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Master’s degree from an accredited university in geotechnical or civil engineering.
- 15+ years of experience in design management and expertise on complex civil infrastructure projects, including deep excavations, embankments, earthworks, subgrade, retaining walls, deep foundations, ground improvement, etc. More experience is a plus.
- Experience with Alternative Delivery Projects (D&B Projects, P3 Projects).
- Ability to work in a fast-track, high-pressure construction environment.
- Professional Engineering License in GA or the goal to obtain the License within the first year.
- Project Management certification is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of ground characterization, field exploration and laboratory testing methods.
- Skills in geotechnical and soil-structure modelling software (2D and 3D).
- Ability to collaborate within the Engineering Services Team and the Project Design Team.
- Assertive with strong analytical and English communication skills.
- Leadership and management capabilities.
- Proficiency in Engineering Software and Microsoft Office.
