Copywriter, Creative Studio Job at OpenAI in San Francisco
OpenAI, San Francisco, California, United States
About The Team
OpenAI didn’t begin as a traditional company. It began as an idea: that artificial intelligence could be developed in a way that benefits everyone. As a creative team, our role is to help make sure the work behind that idea is understood, as it leaves the lab and meets the world. This company works at the frontier of intelligence. Like any frontier, it’s unfinished, constantly shifting, and still being explored. Our job is to stay close to that uncertainty and help shape how this story gets told, in a way that feels grounded and human. We do this through campaigns, launches, films, brand systems, and work that doesn’t fit neatly into any of those categories yet. This team is for people who want to help shape something from the beginning.
About The Role
We’re looking for an experienced Copywriter to join our growing in‑house creative team. In this role, you’ll help define the voice of OpenAI at a moment when the story is still being written. You’ll concept and write across campaigns, product launches, and cultural moments, working closely with design, product, and comms from the start. To us, creativity is a team sport. Ideas get better when you talk them through and build on each other’s thinking. We value curiosity over certainty, kindness over ego, and the ability to balance craft with decisiveness.
In This Role You Will
- Lead and shape storytelling across brand campaigns, stories, and social content
- Own narrative direction for key initiatives and creative workstreams; translate OpenAI’s products and use cases into emotionally resonant, human‑centered narratives
- Develop campaign concepts, messaging frameworks, and story arcs that align with brand strategy
- Partner deeply with design, motion, production, and agency teams to bring ideas to life
- Collaborate with Product, Comms, and Marketing to ensure narrative consistency and impact
- Manage multiple complex projects simultaneously with clarity and confidence
- Evolve and steward OpenAI’s voice and tone across channels
- Provide strategic narrative input into campaign planning and creative development
You Might Thrive In This Role If You
- Have 6+ years of experience writing for brands, gained at a creative agency known for creative excellence and/or in‑house at a modern technology company, with experience in both strongly preferred
- Are a senior‑level writer and storyteller with experience leading narrative strategy for campaigns and brand initiatives
- Have the ability to operate autonomously and drive work forward in fast‑paced environments
- Have deep fluency in product storytelling and real‑world use cases
- Are a strong conceptual thinker with exceptional writing craft
- Have experience partnering cross‑functionally with creative and strategic teams
- Have the ability to balance creative ambition with clarity, precision, and accessibility
- Have strong project ownership and organizational skills
- Have an excellent sense of voice, tone, rhythm, and structure
Nice To Have
- Experience working on technology, innovation, or emerging products
- Background in editorial, long‑form storytelling, or documentary work
- Familiarity with integrated campaign development and brand systems
- Curiosity about AI, creativity, and the future of human expression
