Staff Writer / Program Analyst – VT Group (VTG)
Overview
VTG is seeking a Mid‑level Staff Writer/Program Analyst to support our Navy customer located at the Washington Navy Yard. The position is expected to be onsite five days a week; a hybrid or alternate worksite may be considered if seating is available. The role involves providing dedicated, timely professional support services to the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Director and the Office of Corporate Communication Team. Responsibilities include authoring feature and straight news writing products – such as reports, fact sheets, press releases, website and social media content, and brochures – and providing editorial support for a wide range of audiences, including members of Congress, the Department of Defense (DOD), industry stakeholders, and the general public. The incumbent will consult with subject matter experts to ensure accurate presentation of information.
What will you do?
Proactively and reactively respond to short‑ and long‑term requests from NAVSEA leadership, coordinating with stakeholders to deliver quality communication products on time, including speeches, metrics, SOPs, point papers, articles, communication plans, and analyses.
Support NAVSEA communication strategies and initiatives by assessing data and metrics, and making recommendations on gathering, filing, controlling, and maintaining data for rapid use.
Lead or contribute to strategic initiatives that define and assess NAVSEA processes, data, metrics, and resources associated with improving and optimizing planning, execution, and oversight. This includes developing and implementing initiatives that focus on improved business practices and data utilization, defining work packages and planning, messaging and tasker responses, and program execution processes.
Apply strong analytic and strategic thinking skills as a basis for strategic planning and knowledge management.
Provide analytical support for flag‑level strategy planning, communication approaches, brief development, knowledge management, and process improvement.
Write and edit feature and straight news products for a wide range of audiences, ensuring accurate presentation of information through consultation with subject matter experts.
Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, effectively communicating with senior military and civilian leadership (i.e., flag level and SES level).
Do you have what it takes? Required Skills
Bachelor’s Degree in English, Communications, or a related field.
At least four years of civilian or military experience in corporate communications.
Experience with current Navy communication styles and writing for the DOD.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite – specifically PowerPoint, Word, Access, and Excel.
Proactive customer‑service mindset and management experience.
Active DoD Secret Clearance and ability to maintain it.
Ability to write and edit news copy (articles, social media posts, etc.) according to Navy and Associated Press Stylebooks.
Skill in synthesizing complex ideas into easily understood communications for diverse audiences.
Experience managing small- and large-scale projects that contribute to a larger strategic communications plan.
Ability to manage competing priorities under strict deadlines while maintaining a high level of detail orientation and working effectively with NAVSEA's senior leaders.
Experience with NAVSEA, Congress, the Navy, and the Department of Defense.
Preferred Skills
Experience with NAVSEA/NAVY Legislative, Congressional, Public Affairs, and speech writing.
Some travel required (up to 10%).
SharePoint knowledge‑management experience is a plus.
Pay Range
– VTG’s estimated starting pay range is $70,000–$100,000 annually; the final offer may vary based on experience, education, skill level, and market considerations.
