Emma Willard School is seeking a Writing Center Director. The Starzinger Writing Center (SWC), which opened in the spring of 2023, offers Emma Willard School students support with academic writing, and also encourages writers of all kinds to hone and share their craft. This is a 10‑month position designed to foster the writing culture across the Emma Willard community. The ideal candidate will have training and a proven track record in working with both students and faculty on writing pedagogy.

Position Purpose / Expected Results

Foster a culture of writing (of all genres) across Emma Willard, providing inspiration and support to faculty and students

Lead a strategic plan to make Emma Willard School a premier writing hub for students and teachers

Collaborate with Starzinger Writing Center student advisory group to offer engaging programming and events

Offer writing support and train, support, and manage student tutors to aid in this effort

Conduct writing workshops and conferences according to salient pedagogy

Connect Emma Willard with larger communities of writers and writing instructors locally, regionally, and nationally

Collaborate with the English and History departments, as well as any academic department that centers writing in its curriculum

Collaborate with the Center for Teaching and Learning

Collaborate with the Signature program

Collaborate with Advancement, Communications, and Admissions as appropriate

Teach 2 class sections (likely including one or more semester‑long writing workshops: creative nonfiction, short fiction, or poetry)

Minimum Requirements / Qualifications / Competencies

Bachelor's degree

3‑5 years of relevant experience working in a Writing Center

Have a strong desire to collaborate with others to build programs and partnerships

Have a good working knowledge of G Suite and Microsoft Office and comfort with learning management systems (such as Blackbaud’s onCampus)

Have patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines

Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and development

Demonstrate superior judgment

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree

Training or other certification in Writing Studies, Rhetoric and Composition, or Creative Writing

Salary $58,760 - $119,010 based on education and experience
