Boston Globe Media is seeking an experienced, energetic, and idea‑driven Food Editor to lead food coverage at the Boston Globe and shape how we tell stories about what Boston eats—and why it matters. This role is for a creative, audience‑first editor who understands that food journalism succeeds when it meets people where they are: on the site, in newsletters, on social platforms, and in real life. The ideal candidate brings sharp editorial instincts and a constant flow of ideas that resonate with both loyal readers and new audiences alike, loves restaurants, and understands the forces that shape them. Responsibilities
Conceive, assign, edit, and publish compelling food coverage, including restaurant news, chef profiles, trends, reviews, and reported features, with a digital‑first mindset Set the editorial vision for food coverage, generating ambitious, original ideas and guiding them from pitch to publication Maintain a nuanced understanding of the Boston‑area restaurant industry, including its economics, labor realities, and cultural impact Build and manage relationships with publicists and freelancers while maintaining editorial independence Edit with clarity, rigor, and voice, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and high journalistic standards Collaborate with other editors, reporters, and visual teams to integrate food coverage into broader lifestyle, culture, and news conversations Stay ahead of local and national food trends, translating them into smart, relevant coverage for our audience Handle and coordinate weekly print responsibilities, including working with the copy desk, the visual/photo department, and layout and page design teams to make sure everyone has what they need for the section Handle and coordinate digital production work for Globe.com and audience engagement tasks, including social media, SEO, and newsletters Qualifications
At least five years of daily editing experience Excellent news judgment and a keen sense for stories that provide value to readers Familiarity with the Boston food scene is a plus Proven ability to generate strong story ideas and execute them with energy and authority Excellent editing and writing skills, with a sharp sense of voice and structure An understanding of how food intersects with business, equity, immigration, labor, and community Comfort working in a fast‑paced editorial environment and juggling multiple projects at once Experience with commissioning freelance contributors A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment Location & Salary
This position is based in Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. Candidates should be based in the area or willing to move. The annual salary for this role is $90,400 – $122,300. It is unlawful in Massachusetts to require or administer a lie detector test as a condition of employment or continued employment.
