Adult English Language And Literacy Student Mentor - St. Agnes Library

Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for The New York Public Library (NYPL). Professional teachers offer free instruction to our adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking, and listening from a 0 to an 8th-grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, AELL has taken on the charge to expand ESOL instruction in the Library.

Student Mentors work as part of the administrative team that welcomes, assesses, and formally registers new students into the program. Student Mentors are responsible for accurate student information collection and data entry. Student Mentors are also expected to provide administrative support and complete general office duties as assigned.

Must be available to work at the St. Agnes Library on Mondays from 9:30am-5:30pm, Wednesdays from 12:00-8:00pm and Saturdays from 9:30am-2:30pm.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with entering statistical data for all ESOL/ABE classes
  • Assist with tracking demographic information for new student information sessions
  • Provide support with preparing materials and event setup (computers, video equipment, room arrangement, etc.) for information sessions throughout our different libraries
  • Assist with student intake throughout NYPL; greet new students, direct them through the registration process by signing them in, seat them for the program, serve as a translator (if applicable), and make them feel comfortable within a library setting
  • Administer TABE and BestPlus standardized assessments for language and literacy (after receiving training)
  • Help students fill out forms and collect the data necessary to complete the Individual Student Record Form (ISRF)
  • Provide office assistance (photocopying, faxing, organizing supplies, answering phones, scheduling appointments, checking in/out library materials, etc.)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education and Certifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required

Required Experience

  • Prior experience working in a formal or informal education setting with the public

Required Skills

  • Must be fluent in English and another language (ex: Spanish, Mandarin, French, Russian, Arabic, etc)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work with a culturally diverse adult population
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google applications
  • Ability to give clear and concise instructions to a diverse adult population
  • Ability to follow directions and work well independently and as a part of a group
  • Reliability and flexibility

Physical Duties

  • Lifting/moving laptops, textbooks, and supplies up to 20 lbs required
  • Traveling throughout NYC required

Schedule

  • 19 hours per week
  • Mondays from 9:30am-5:30pm, Wednesdays from 12:00-8:00pm and Saturdays from 9:30am-2:30pm during class cycles; some flexibility required
