Main Purpose of Job The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Marketing Content Manager within its Division of Marketing.
POSITION DUTIES This role shapes the voice of Maryland as a place to do business, build a workforce and grow an economy. It combines strategy, writing, collaboration and cross‑channel content development. The incumbent will create messaging and content used across Maryland’s statewide marketing efforts including web, digital ads, social media, email, print collateral, trade show materials, presentations, video scripts and more. This role translates complex information about Maryland’s business advantages, industries, workforce, incentives and economic priorities into clear, compelling content. The incumbent will also work closely with Commerce leadership, business development teams, and subject matter experts to ensure all content reflects Maryland’s value proposition and aligns with statewide goals. The position also supports high‑level prospect engagement by helping develop custom presentations and materials that elevate Maryland’s brand. This role is a key contributor to the Maryland Marketing Partnership, the statewide branding body that funds and guides Maryland’s business attraction marketing. Tasks may include preparing materials for board meetings, making presentations, supporting partner engagement and helping maintain accurate information on partner and board communications.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong writing and editing skills; Strategic marketing experience connecting target audiences with messages that resonate; Analytical mindset and ability to optimize content for performance. Ability to handle multiple, concurrent and high priority projects; Proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant software.
Minimum Qualifications Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Six years of administrative staff or professional work.
Notes
Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.
Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.
Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.
Desired Or Preferred Qualifications
Five or more years of professional experience in marketing, communications, content strategy or related fields.
Experience with economic development, government communications, workforce or B2B audiences.
Experience shaping brand messaging or serving as a voice owner for a major organization.
Experience with content planning, editorial calendars and cross‑channel campaigns.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
