Capital One
Manager, Product Design – Design Systems
(Manager level – IC)
At Capital One, we’re building a leading information‑based technology company. Still founder‑led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard Fairbank, Capital One is on a mission to help our customers succeed by bringing ingenuity, simplicity, and humanity to banking. We measure our efforts by the success our customers enjoy and the advocacy they exhibit. We’re succeeding because they’re succeeding.
Guided by our shared values, we thrive in an environment where collaboration and openness are valued. We believe that innovation is powered by perspective and that teamwork and respect for each other lead to superior results. We elevate each other and obsess about doing the right thing. Our associates serve with humility and a deep respect for their responsibility in helping our customers achieve their goals and realize their dreams. Together, we’re on a quest to change banking for good.
We are currently seeking a Product Designer to join our Card Servicing Experience design team. We design the experiences and tools that help our servicing associates help our customers, or help our customers help themselves. The work we do ensures customers can easily navigate any question or problem they have along their journey with us, no matter which path they follow.
This Product Designer will combine their craft expertise with an understanding of our customers and the business to co‑create innovative solutions to complex problems. You will oversee work on our agent platform and its associated design system and governance processes – ensuring that when we expand our product feature set, we do so in a methodical, systematic way. We’re looking for a designer who will take a systems‑mindset to defining and deploying consistent, reusable componentry and patterns across our product portfolio. This designer gets excited by enabling fellow design and product partners with the documentation needed to leverage, contribute to, scale, and evolve our library.
Here are some of the expected competencies for this role: Product Design Expertise:
Demonstrate a high degree of skill in product design, leveraging a variety of skills across interaction, visual and service design; in collaboration with cross‑functional partners, inform the use of appropriate tools, platforms, frameworks and design systems and create artifacts that may include journey maps, blueprints, high‑fidelity designs and prototypes.
Design System Expertise:
Build and maintain robust, scalable components with nested instances, variants, text‑properties, booleans, and interactive components.
Document component tech specs and usage guidelines including dos, don’ts, accessibility guidance and usage examples.
Create responsive components and documentation via auto layout, constraints, and interactive connections.
Apply atomic design methodology to ensure proper level of inheritance throughout our design system.
Organize and publish new versions of our design library and suite of documentation via branching controls with a risk‑adverse mindset.
Provide a single source of design truth by managing access and ensuring version control.
Leadership:
Lead design projects, directing and delegating work for more junior team members and building strong partnerships with cross‑functional stakeholders while also mentoring and helping to mature the overall product design practice at Capital One.
Be a strategic partner to other design system teams across the enterprise to ensure cohesion.
Human‑Centered:
Navigate the needs of partners and stakeholders, leveraging critical‑thinking skills that factor in data, research insights, scalability and tech constraints, while ensuring the team focuses on customer‑centered solutions and inclusive design.
Business‑Focused:
Demonstrate proficiency with products and processes and apply relevant insights on customers, competitors and broader market trends to business challenges that shape a shared point of view for your team, partners and stakeholders.
Problem‑Solving:
Demonstrate a solid understanding of tech, data capabilities and emerging technologies and use this knowledge to inform your work and help your cross‑functional team move faster and navigate technical limitations in service of the impactful solutions.
Collaboration:
Facilitate workshops and collaborate with designers across various teams to validate new components and evolve existing ones.
Partner, mentor and teach other designers who contribute to the design system.
Partner with Product Owners to prioritize roadmaps.
Communication: Present work to audiences across levels and job functions using a human‑centered approach that integrates design frameworks, data and research insights to effectively articulate insights and design decisions.
Facilitate onboarding for new teams leveraging our design system.
Through governance, provide action‑oriented guidance and approval for teams leveraging our design system.
Share important announcements to the community regarding our design system and processes.
The ideal candidate has a strong portfolio demonstrating their process, results and impact.
