National Substation Physical Design Sub-Business Class Leader
HDR is a leading engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services company. This role will drive protection and control design matters for our national substation practice, reporting to Area Operations Leadership and the national Substation Business Class Lead.
Location: Portland, Oregon (primary). Responsibilities
Drove development and implementation of a quality program within the practice to foster physical design technical growth for junior engineers.
Led a physical design training and career development program for the national business class.
Quarterly training and meetings with EITs and junior engineers across the practice to discuss overall issues, project experience, lessons learned.
Created and maintained technical practices, standards and expectations to accomplish market sector visions and solve client problems.
Developed and applied technical tools, standards and techniques to enhance service quality and efficiency.
Built a network of technical experts and SMEs to drive technical goals for the national practice.
Supported professional development of staff and development of production tools including best practices, technical policies, papers and presentations.
Led proposal technical reviews and participated in root cause analysis and solution development for challenging project issues.
Achieved a 70‑75% utilization goal by supporting projects.
Preferred Qualifications
Active participant in ongoing technical working groups (internally and externally).
Strong knowledge of substation arrangements, including constructability, bus span calculations, AC/DC sizing, raceway design, cable design, material selection, BOM development, grounding, lightning protection, substation lighting, major equipment specification, general arrangements and cross‑sectional arrangements.
Experience with substation design software such as CDEGS and WinIGS.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering or related field.
10+ years of experience in substation physical design.
Committed to HDR values, quality and continuous improvement.
Valid professional registration and relevant technical experience.
Experience developing and managing diverse teams.
Strong collaboration skills with area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers.
