Job Description The University of Toledo is seeking a Media Relations Specialist to tell the story of The University of Toledo and UToledo Health. This communications professional will engage with local, regional, and national media to highlight news and initiatives from UToledo Health’s healthcare services, including the University of Toledo Medical Center and auxiliary clinics, and UToledo’s health professions academic programs across multiple colleges. The position requires strong reporting, writing, and verbal communication skills to speak on behalf of the institution.

As a critical member of the University’s communications team, the Media Relations Specialist will help shape the institution’s reputation, attract and retain students, patients, faculty, staff, and administrators, support research and philanthropic efforts, and positively contribute to campus culture by delivering essential information to stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain relationships with local, regional, and national media contacts.

Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other communications.

Respond to media inquiries promptly and professionally.

Coordinate media coverage of campus events and initiatives.

Monitor media coverage and provide reports to leadership.

Manage the institution’s website, email campaigns, and blog content.

Assist in the planning and execution of media-related events and special projects.

Collaborate with faculty, staff, and university leaders to craft messaging.

Ensure all communications adhere to Associated Press and University style guidelines.

Maintain high levels of professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards.

Qualifications and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, English, political science, business, philosophy, or a related field.

Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a reporter, public relations officer, communications specialist, or a related role.

Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office, website management, email campaign, and blog software.

Strong writing, storytelling, editing, and proofreading skills.

Ability to adhere to Associated Press and University style guidelines.

Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to speak on behalf of the institution.

A high degree of professionalism, work ethic, and ability to handle confidential and sensitive materials.

High proficiency in project management, attention to detail, and prioritization of work.

Experience working in a large, complex organization is preferred.

Ability to work under minimal supervision, tight time constraints, and periodic high-volume circumstances.

Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals and as part of a team.

Flexibility and availability outside normal business hours to respond to urgent matters.

Working Conditions Works in an open, professional office environment with face‑to‑face meetings with university leaders and news sources, requiring a professional appearance and demeanor. The environment may involve high stress levels and occasional heavy lifting for special events. While working hours are typically standard business hours, employees may need to work evenings and/or weekends for special events.
