Communication Access Coordinator Inside Higher Ed is seeking a qualified professional to join its Disability Services team at UMass Amherst.

Job Summary The Communication Access Coordinator supports a caseload of students with a wide range of disabilities and temporary impairments by facilitating an interactive process of determining eligibility for appropriate accommodations and ensuring individuals with disabilities receive appropriate accommodation, adjustments, and modifications as mandated by federal, state, and local laws. Primarily works with Deaf/HOH (hard of hearing) students but also serves as a generalist for students with disabilities.

Essential Functions

Meet with all registered Deaf/HOH students to ensure appropriate communication access accommodations are addressed based on the disability, context, and setting for full access to academic, residential and student life needs.

Train faculty and student supervisors on how best to implement communication access accommodations in the academic and work environment.

Manage a diverse caseload of University students and campus visitors with a range of disabilities and accommodation requirements.

Serve as the primary contact for students and relevant campus stakeholders.

Interpret medical, psychological, and/or educational documentation to determine appropriate accommodation eligibility and facilitate accommodation plans for multiple settings.

Maintain a staff of qualified interpreters (temporary staff) and other qualified communication access professionals to address time‑sensitive assignments for students.

Supervise set‑up and maintenance of equipment for students and equipment loans.

Work with DS Clerk to provide info on interpreter rates, ordering equipment, and budget transfers when needed.

Identify and provide developmentally appropriate support, advocacy, counseling, and referrals for a range of academic, professional, social, psychological, and medical concerns.

Evaluate and prioritize case management demands.

Maintain contact notes, collect work output data, generate notifications of accommodation eligibility, and produce performance reports.

Communicate promptly via email, letters, memos, and telephone.

Support the general operation of Disability Services and promote broad disability awareness, access, and inclusivity.

Interpret and communicate relevant disability legislation and University policies to students, employees, instructors, faculty, and management.

Represent Disability Services at University and departmental events.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships within the work environment and with the campus community.

Provide appropriate accommodation services to University stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree.

More than three (3+) years’ relevant experience.

Ability to read audiograms.

Expertise in communication access technology and amplification equipment, including cochlear implant management.

Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and related federal, state, and local regulations.

Experience working effectively with a range of disabilities.

Understanding of characteristics and accommodation requirements of people with diverse disabilities, focusing on full engagement in campus life.

Preferred Qualifications

Certificate from a 2‑year interpreter training program.

MA Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing screening/approval.

ASL fluency.

Experience in education, student affairs, human services, special education, disability studies, or counseling.

National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf certification.

Microsoft Office and database experience.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm.

May be required to work some nights and weekends.
