The Laurel Independent is Seeking a Part-Time Managing Editor

Responsibilities: The managing editor, the top editorial staff position at The Laurel Independent, works closely with an associate editor and volunteers to put together our monthly print edition and contribute to our web content. This position is home‑office based and part‑time with flexible hours, but requires some weekend and evening availability.
The managing editor is responsible for connecting story ideas with writers and photographers, editing copy as it comes in, monitoring beats, and attending city events as needed. This person must be able to contribute editorial content, recruit and manage volunteer staffing, and ensure that content conforms to house style and standards.
In 2026, The Laurel Independent will generally be published on the Tuesday prior to the first of the month. The managing editor must be available to edit three print drafts the weekend before publication, which arrive between Saturday midday and Sunday evening.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated accomplishment as a writer/journalist and/or editor
Excellent writing and copy‑editing skills
Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to lead a diverse staff
A flexible schedule and understanding of the news cycle
Residence in Laurel or a neighboring community in Prince George’s County
Baccalaureate degree (B.A./B.S.)
Base pay is $22,000 per year; we have a smaller opening for a contractor that could be combined with this position for the right candidate.
