Position Purpose The Research Communications Manager is responsible for developing compelling, creative, and accurate content that highlights the breadth and impact of the research enterprise at the Geisel School of Medicine. This role will translate complex scientific concepts into engaging narratives for diverse audiences, including faculty, students, alumni, donors, and the public. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the manager will collaborate closely with researchers, administrators, and communications colleagues to elevate Geisel’s research profile and support strategic priorities.

Required Qualifications – Education and Years Experience Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

5+ years of relevant experience in writing, editing, and communications or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience writing about medicine, science and higher education-related content for both professional and general audiences.

Excellent interviewing, research, writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

Ability to research, write, and edit engaging content that can be effectively adapted across diverse platforms—including print, web, video, and social media.

Demonstrated experience in working with media, including pitching stories and working with content experts.

Demonstrated experience working with photographers and designers as part of content development process.

Demonstrated experience working effectively with faculty, leadership, and multiple internal/external audiences. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Docs. Experience with or willingness to learn additional applications, including digital photo editing and web content management systems.

Ability to manage many projects at once and stay within deadlines. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Writing and editing experience in academic, research, or medical setting.

Advanced communications degree or experience in science writing and media preferred.

Knowledge of SEO and web analytics.

Comfort working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Description – Work Activities (Percentages)

Research and Content Development – 70%

Write, edit, and produce high-quality stories, profiles, and features about research initiatives, discoveries, and faculty achievements for newsletters, publications, and digital platforms.

Plan and develop content for print, web, video, and other internal and external communications channels to support the mission, goals, and brand of the Geisel School of Medicine, with an emphasis on promoting Geisel’s research enterprise.

Collaborate with Geisel Communications to plan and create content for social media channels that highlight research programs and impact.

Provide art direction to photographers and videographers to ensure visuals effectively convey Geisel’s research story and align with brand standards.

Media Relations – 20%

Develop news pitches and respond to media requests related to research as needed.

Partner with Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Health communications offices to create and distribute media releases and cultivate subject experts for media opportunities.

Build and maintain relationships with faculty, researchers, and other campus constituencies to identify and promote research stories.

Administration and Planning – 10%

Assist in developing and managing communications strategies and activities that advance the mission, goals, and brand of the medical school and its research enterprise.

Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications.

Perform other duties as assigned to support the Dean’s Office Communications team.
