THE LAB PRESS is hiring a part‑time, freelance Social Media Manager to own our social presence and support our Marketing + PR team. This person will be responsible for planning and publishing consistent, high‑quality social content and newsletters, with a strong emphasis on supporting and collaborating with our artists and writers.

This role is ideal for someone who understands publishing/comics/geek culture, has strong writing instincts, and can operate with autonomy. After onboarding, you will have authority to plan and publish without day‑to‑day approvals.

Key responsibilities

Own social strategy and calendar across Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and Facebook (and recommend platform expansions as appropriate)

Plan and publish content consistently (minimum 1 original post per week, with additional posting around events and new releases)

Collaborate with artists, writers, and partners to coordinate reshares, collabs, and community‑forward content

Write and manage newsletters, including planning, drafting, and coordinating internal inputs

Support marketing copywriting needs (website copy updates, blog content as needed)

Coordinate with our marketing graphic designer for visual assets and content needs (graphics, event coverage, short‑form video, etc.)

Monitor and respond to social DMs as light customer service, and route questions/info to the internal team

Collaborate with our PR lead and paid media support as needed (you will not need to manage paid ads)

Help identify creators/partners/reviewers we should consider for gifting (you will not be responsible for executing gifting)

Time commitment and working style

5–10 hours per week (typical), with flexibility based on launches and events

Work‑from‑home (with the exception of signings & events)

In‑person attendance required for select LA‑area signings and special events (approximately quarterly; occasional evenings/weekends for special events)

Weekly touch‑base meetings with our marketing lead to stay aligned (reporting is not primarily metric‑driven; quality and consistency matter most)

Requirements

Must live in the Greater Los Angeles area

5+ years of relevant experience managing brand social media

Experience in at least one of the following: book publishing, comics, or geek/pop‑culture adjacent brands (not celebrity entertainment)

Proven ability to create and execute a content strategy independently

Comfortable collaborating with creatives and supporting artists/writers with thoughtful, relationship‑driven content

Able to share portfolio examples and writing samples

Nice to have

Newsletter strategy and audience engagement experience

Community management experience

Basic short‑form video editing ability (if you have it, great; otherwise this can be handled by the design role)

Tools and workflow We use Dropbox, Google Drive, and Slack. We are open to using your preferred social scheduling/publishing tools.

How to apply Please apply via LinkedIn and include:

Links to social accounts you have managed (and a brief description of your role on each)

2–3 writing samples (newsletter and/or social copy preferred)

A short note confirming you are LA‑based and able to attend occasional in‑person events

Your hourly rate and typical weekly availability
